  What type of canvas are you looking for? You have a sewn type material like sunbrella or a heavier material that has a more vinyl feel to it. Both can be used on an awning but the latter is going to be pricier. Price can also vary based on color.
  
  sunbrella type: $35-40 per yard (about 20 yards)
  heavier: $50-60 per yard (looking at about 15 yards of fabric)
  
  difference in yardage is due to difference in fabric width.

  Would the sunbrella block rain very well? I would like something that would allow air circulation but also block most of the rain. I know it's probably not possible to have both but I currently have a tarp like material party tent up now and it traps a lot of heat. It's not very durable either but it was free.

  You would have to apply a waterproofer so the sunbrella just like your boat top.
