Went out this morning at 6:00 am with my 9 year old son. Seas were calm until you hit about 200 feet. Went all the way to 1400 feet. Pretty snotty out there. Finally found a decent size paddy. Bait, triple tail and could see dolphin in the waves coming off the swells. Live bait, bonito strips, lures, x-rap--didn't matter. Tried different colors and lengths on the lures. They wanted nothing to do with us. Came in and found a decent weed line in 700 feet. Trolled up and down for an hour. No love there either. Went in and hit the reef. Caught all the lane and yellowtail snapper we wanted along with assorted other bottom fish. Played with a shark for a while as well.
Could not find the dolphin but had a great time on the reef. Best part was that I got to fish with my son. 10 hours of fishing and he was ready to stay another couple of hours. I am a lucky dad.
Not much to report, but I will sum up my observations for you. Water is really dirty! Today the clean water was in the 450 ft - 475 ft depth and there was a nice rip and weedline at this depth. I went out to 1200 ft and had one knock down and a skippy to show for it. I heard a few guys on the radio say they caught some dolphin in about 1500 ft and a few reports of wahoo in 150 ft - 200 ft. I gave up trolling and bottom fished and got an assortment of reef fish.
