Bonito off North Palm Beach Co?

Anyone catching bonito between Lake Worth and Jupiter Inlet lately? Have some Pacific island friends who actually love to eat it, consider it the best food fish in FL, and want a few for an upcoming wedding. Serious here, any reports appreciated...

They are out there, but I bet your friends are confusing it with the Pacific Bonita, that is very different from our bonita

If they are really talking about little tunny, I would love to hear how they are preparing it. When I visited French Polynesia, there was a lot of bonito on the menu, but it wasn't "our" bonita. That's for sure.

The problem with targeting Bonito is the darn dolphin and wahoo keep getting in the way.

Seriously though, I think they may be thinking of a different fish. For what it is worth....

However, if they already ate our little tunny and liked it please post a recipe. I tried it once. Brought one home when I was a kid and was so excited that my grandma attempted to make it edible. Horrible! At least she tried, I learned to never bring one home again.

I actually have not caught any in 2-3 weeks. My understanding is to stay inside 400'.

Yes, Little Tunny. Boneheads. Neeters. False Albacore. Bonito Gym. Shark bait. The Scourge of South FL. Don't make me post a pic.

I'm not joking when I say the people who want this eat it RAW, organs and all. I wouldn't believe it, but I've seen it myself. I've been asked to catch some for a special occasion, which would be annoyingly easy in the summer, but I've never really caught them this time of year. Just wondering if anyone has hit the school lately. YES, I'm targeting bonita.

For what it's worth, I tried seared bonito once. It was pretty bad...but if you like really strong flavor, or are really hungry, it could be dinner.

Dennis - got out around 11am. Started out with a blackfin and then a couple of schoolies then it was quiet until about 2pm when I found Mr. Birdie and cushed it until about 5pm. Not posting this one - don't want to be hated more than I already am :)

Recipe.....Cut out loin about 2.5 inches off the upper fillet near the dorsal. You can see the color change. Cut into small silver dollar sized medalions. Next, sear in a cast iron pan with Toney Satchaeres cajun seasoning. After browning cut and dip it with some soy sauce and wasabi before eating. It's edible!

A trip to any local drift boat operation will solve your problem

Bonita is very good raw. I don't eat the guts though, so I can't say. "Poke" is what the Islanders I know always make.

Pull small plastic squids or feathers fast (8+ knots) from 75' - 120' and you'll have your fill of 2-5#'ers.
