Hopetown in April

FS RickFS Rick Posts: 113 Officer
Gentlemen,

We are considering expanding our Marsh Harbor stay this year. Would love to hear from anybody who has fished the area in April, through early May. We generally donm't go till Memorial day weekend.

Any info would be appreciated

My parents lived at Bahama Palm Shores which is about 20 miles south of Marsh Harbor for 20 years and I spent a lot of time fishing in that area in late April and early May. Mid May was the best time but early May is still a good time to be there.

Most of the trolling we did was coming out of Casuarina Point and going out the channel through Cherokee. The Dolphin bite is fantastic that time of year. You only need to go out about a mile to hit deep water. Troll from in front of the radio tower down to Duck Cay and back and just keep covering that area, you can’t go wrong.

If you move in closer and fish the reefs from 60 to 90 feet you have a good shot at Strawberry Grouper (my favorite) and Yellowtail Snapper. Trolling with small spoons from 40 to 90 feet will guarantee Spanish and Cero Mackerel as well as the ever present Barracuda. If you want to do some Bone fishing there are many good spots that you can easily reach.

If you are fishing from the beach cut squid works well. You will catch Bonefish, Yellowtail, Palometta and Bar jacks. If you use the Palometta for live bait the Blacktip and Lemon sharks love them. Fishing at night you have a good shot at Mangrove Snapper and sharks.

If you need details feel free to email me.

    Good luck!

Thanks so much for all the great info. Do you know anything about the Conch Inn and Marina in Marsh? We're looking for a place to keep the boat for 2 months.

you might want to check with lighthouse marine in hopetown, we have left boats with for long term storage and were very happy with the service/people there

I would leave the boat at Seaspray or Hopetown marina, much better service and less "undesirables" lurking around which Marsh has plenty of

April is still pretty windy. Water temp will dictate where the best fishing will be. Wahoo bite is still decent in April with billfish and mahi picking up with water temps. Plenty of blackfin tuna around as well. I agree with whoever said fish down around Cherokee and south. Bite may be all the way down around Hole-in-the-wall. Long runs! I also agree with dpdash, Sea Spray would be my choice. Great people to be around for extended periods. Junior and Renaldo will take good care of you. Their prices for extended stays will not be beat.
