The act of "catching"

I have a 3 1/2 year old who I have taken out on the boat since he was just a few months old...I had never considered keeping a limit for him until yesterday when he was reeling in fish all on his own. He still cannot cast out but if I cast out and hand him the pole he is all good to go if something bites.

So my question is: what is the act of catching? If we go trout fishing and he reels in 4 trout on his own does he get his own limit? How involved can I be in the "catch"?

I rarely "limit out" this is more out of curiosity then necessity.

Thank you!
