  Mayan Cichlid.  It is said they are good to eat but I believe it depends on the water quality where they are caught.

  They are highly invasive taking over most of the canals in South Florida.

  We catch them off the alley in the spring (they are there all year but spawning in the spring)
  They are nice white meat, similar to mangrove snapper.
  We don't keep any under 11 inches just cause there's not much on the smaller ones.
  We've eaten a tone of them

  I once made the argument that they should be called Red Crappie.
  
  Of course, they fight much harder than crappie...
