Welp, that's a wrap on Gag season 2021!

clarosaclarosa Posts: 993 Officer
Ran a few more trips the past two weeks and the bite stayed pretty consistent off of Hudson. We worked anywhere from 30'-60' with most fish being caught from 35-45'. Some spots the grunt heads and dead baits worked best and others live was all they would eat. I think the best, most consistent bait this fall and winter was large live pigfish and second being big live pinfish. Boston mackerel took the cake for dead bait and grunt heads in second. Trolling was good for the fall but hasn't produced any keepers the last few trips. Water has been too dirty i think. Just got cataract surgery on my left eye so I'm done with grouper this season. Here's some pics from last two weeks and until next time, tight lines!

    Great job!

We didn't get out near as much as I wanted, but it was the first successful winter for gags I've had since I moved here.  Thanks for the tips!

Awesome stuff man. Wishing we had the kind of nearshore bottom y'all do up there down in Venice/Sarasota, most of my available days for offshore trips were on days with weather too rough to make a run long enough to get to where I heard the gags had been. Ah well, always next year.

How did the red tide affect the ledges out there in 45-70'? I used to fish out of englewood around june for a couple weeks and found some good Gag spots but it was before red tide decimated that area...twice. We def have a hell of a fishery up here, but the secret is out. Every time I go out now seems to be more and more boats, and a lot that will come right up to you on our spot. Luckily I try to make sure I find a few more spots every time I head out because a lot of our spots have gotten confiscated by weekend warriors haha.

Southern areas of Sarasota county weren't hit as badly as Tampa Bay or northern Sarasota Bay, but still pretty rough. I mostly fish offshore out of Venice inlet with the occasional trip out of Stump or Big Pass, back in May-July I had to run out ~15 miles to get out of the brown water. Not as much floating fish or stink in the air as I experienced further north, but most of my bottom spots inside of 70' are still significantly worse than they were last year. Zero legal RG this year off of a cluster of live bottom and ledges in 70' that's usually my most reliable winter/spring producer (though still plenty of shorts plus other fish). Got a few short gags fishing some canyons in 50' back in the early summer before anything got too far south, but the fishery from Englewood north definitely seems markedly worse in that depth range.

Take it with a grain of salt though. I'm mostly a weekend warrior when it comes to offshore stuff, most of my fishing these days is a few hours of wading after work.

That is terrible to hear!! Lets hope it heals back up. I didn't fish it much but was a nice fishery, especially the inshore snook and redfish there in Stump pass.
