Today's excursion 10/14/21

I went out early again today and it was choppy again, but settled down starting around 10:00. Went to an area N of the scallop rack where I caught over 20 small trout on Monday...only got 1 today and lost several soft plastics to the little munchers (suspect puffers, Perch, and small BSB). I got a couple very hard hits which bent the rod and resulted in immediate cut-offs (Sp. Macks?)  I moved in to the sand/gravel flats just south of CR 1&2 and picked up a nice Mangrove Snapper. The little munchers ate some more of my soft plastics so I decided to move a few miles North.

I witnessed some feeding activity on the way and decided to drag some lures for Mackerel.  I don't usually mix spoons with body baits but that's just what I did today.  I got an almost immediate hit on a Clarkspoon with no hook-up, then got clobbered on a bodybait, blue over white in 8' of water. 20 minutes later I slipped the net around a huge Spanish Mack.  27" and around 10 lbs. My PB and one I'll remember for a long time. He has a date with the smoker, and the mangrove snapper will make a fine sandwich for my darling wife.

The weeds have cleared up considerably off Crystal River, water still 81 degrees, but baitfish appear to be returning and are being chased by predator fish (jumping all over).

Back out tomorrow, but not as early as usual.

Nice going on that Mac! This is the best time of the year for them.

MY WORST FEAR......THAT WHEN I DIE MY WIFE WILL SELL ALL MY BOATS & FISHING GEAR FOR WHAT I TOLD HER I PAID FOR IT.......

I may not always agree with what you say,
but I will always respect your right to be wrong!

Thanks for the comments! I slept in 'til 6:30 today and took my time going out. Still on the water at 8 and went back to where I caught the big Mac yesterday. Set out the same spread, same speed, same direction, etc.  A very slight chop and light wind out of the East. I dragged the lures around for 5 hours all out and back just S of the PP channel. Saw what looked like Bonito chasing Ladyfish out of the water. Just a few bait pods, but no weeds.

I got a couple hits but no hookups. The wind died off and the water became slick calm. Great fishing, but no catching. I ran out of my favorite beverage (must stay hydrated!) and decided to call it a day. The boat needs a bath so tomorrow is wash and maintenance day, along with some college football.

I have a question that concerns going out of Crystal River in the morning...I usually see fish on the river surface getting spooked by the boat, and other fish that surface and dive back down.  The latter fish look like juvenile tarpon, maybe getting a gulp of air.  I don't know!  I caught a small tarpon in the river before so I'm wondering if that's what I'm seeing.  Any input is appreciated.

Good luck to all and be safe out there.

My granddaughter just taught me how to add the pic of my big mac. The knife is just shy of 12" long.

Thanks, but something's not right with the pic. From now on a ruler or tape measure will be in the pic.
