good fishing today at shell mound

OK, well, not so much for me personally... did get quite a few catfish on the larger end on the spectrum, so at least my rod was bent which is all I really care about.

A couple fishing there as well, the lady tied into big black drum three times, and all three times lost 'em trying to get them over to where lifting them would've been possible.  A bridge net is in my near future.  The guy with her caught a couple of nice mid-slot reds.

Saw lots of bait being chased, etc. just as the incoming tide peaked.  Will be going out again tomorrow to catch the earlier part of the incoming tide.

Cool. Watching the sucess (and failures) of the others out fishing will help on future visits.

    Thanks for the report

Ugh.  Discovered a few BAD things today.

1 - I didn't clear my cast net after my last throw apparently.  Guess how bad a finger mullet can make a car trunk stink in less than 24 hours?

2 - I've got a big tear in my cast net.   Thankfully it is a small el cheapo and will be $20 to replace.

On the flip side....  tied into a few big catfish and 4 more black tip sharks today.  Lost two of the sharks trying to actually get 'em to where I could get them up out of the water.  Released one and kept one for a buddy who likes to eat 'em.  All were about 24" long at the fork.

Fishing was good, but on the last shark I used my last half finger mullet, so instead of fighting to catch more (any idea as to how hard it is to net bait in a 3' net with a 2' tear at the top?) I packed it in and went home.  Did see several large black drum cruising the oysters right in front of the pier, but couldn't get them interested.

Use some mono and fix that net yourself.

I would... but the mesh size is just a tad too big, lots of the finger mullet and other bait fish I catch end up with their gills stuck in the net.  So now I need vs "need" to get a new net :)   Unfortunately, it won't be "cheap" - a 4' net w/ 1/4" mesh is over $50....

Maybe someday we can meet out at shell mound or Cedar Keys and fish from the piers.  Just let me know a couple of days before and the time.  You and your son can hold me a spot.  I like fishing from shore.

We'll be at the shell mound pier next to the boat launch.  End of the paved road where the camp ground is, keep going.... stop when you get to the water :)

Stop well short of the water at low tide 😉

I will meet you out there another time, maybe in the fall when it is cooler. I visited Cedar Keys today to hopefully take some photos of Brown Pelicans.  I took the poles and stopped at 3 different places in Cedar Keys and the last stop was at Shell Mound spot #4.  It was catfish heaven or hell any way you look at it, catching catfish after catfish  Tryed each spot around a half-hour each.  Every spot I caught catfish, one spot I caught probably one every 2 to 3 minutes.  I tried Shell Mound for an hour because I had the place to myself.  A 3-foot shark bit me off and that was the only fish that wasn't a catfish.  A small boat came in when I was leaving and they said all they caught were catfish too.
    Good luck on Saturday.

I found that using larger hunks of cut bait makes sure that at least the catfish you get are decent sized and put up a fight.  And since I don't eat fish, as long as my rod gets bent I don't care too much...
