Cedar Key in September?

cmhairecmhaire Posts: 188 Deckhand
We were in CK in May, but the weather wouldn’t cooperate for us and we only managed a few decent trout before we had to head in. It did allow us to learn the area though and get comfortable with navigating it.

I would like to give it another shot, but the only time I really have available is in September or maybe November. What would be a better month?

The fall here in Jacksonville (October-November) are definitely our best months for inshore. Thanks in advance for your opinion!

Well, I'm going this weekend, and the weekend after that, and the weekend after that, and ... :)

Anyway, depending on how you are fishing (shore/pier/bridges, boat, type of boat etc) I'd say November would be better.   If you are in a skinny water boat/kayak then I'd start at the Shell Mound boat ramp and head right up into the finger creeks.  Several of my coworkers report that the trout and reds stack up in those creeks.  However! You must keep an eye on the tide charts and time very closely, it gets shallow/dry quick!  You want to fish on the incoming tide - when the tide turns it can be like a switch being turned off as far as catching goes....

If I come before October i’ll be in my micro skiff so I can go about anywhere I need too. If I come in Nov my new boat will be here (redfisher 16). Maybe i’ll just go twice lol

This past weekend ... saw a lot of large black drum tailing about 2hrs before high tide right in front of the SM pier, saw one lady tie into 3 of them and loose all 3 at the very end.  The guy with her pulling in two nice redfish just under legal max.  And I've been tangling with small blacktip sharks (24" or so at fork) and even the catfish seem to be running to the larger sizes.

I’m going to try and throw a trip together soon to check out shell mound while I still have the micro. Thanks for all the tips!

I would pick November. Cooler and less crowds .
