Crystal River opening day grouper 6/1/21

Left the FIT ramp at 8am with forum member JTS and  his son to catch the outgoing tide. Water was surprisingly clean and not many floating weeds. Bait schools were scarce ? Didn't really see any in 12 - 20'..
Actually trolled some but no takers so anchored and fished dead herring. Got a couple shark and a really big ray. Took some time but got two grouper with one throwback.                                                                                                                                                            Moved out to 18' and hit gumbo. Wasn't super bad but always a little annoying. It's on the bottom and brown so shouldn't be around much longer.

Tide started to slow and picked up 3 keepers with two being decent size.  Unfortunately had a couple of googans around , they know who they are.
Ended up with a couple of limits for the guys to enjoy.

A good way to start off the season. That's good news that the brown gumbo is now on the bottom. Last Thursday it was still suspended and almost unfishable.

Nice job Capt Louie. Me and the wife will be hunting for them tomorrow with the red snapper fleet out of the hatch.

Nice going! I trolled yesterday 6/2 with nothing to show for it but there were no weeds and no problems with the gumbo trolling the same depths. However it was a nice day on the water.

It was a good day.  When we got home my son said “I can’t understand it I’m fishing right beside Capt. Louie same bait everything and he is getting all the fish”.  He did manage to catch one 29 inch grouper for the day Capt. Louie got the others.  One grouper was right at 24 inches which we decided to let go but my son couldn’t revive him so into the cooler he went.  The next day when I pulled him out of the cooler he had lost 1/2 inch.  Probably best to make everything 1/2 inch larger than the rules.

Nice job Jts crew. Can't beat that catch for early season summer.
