Middle Keys Redfish and Snook on the Fly - Ft. Schminnow Gurgler

Definitely in a summer pattern now in the Keys.  Tarpon everywhere and sports fish roaming the mangrove edges when the lowering tides flush them out of the deep cover.  I'm seeing a hundred or so Juvenile Tarpon per trip just running the edges and sitting on any deep cuts that hold water at lowest tide.  Although the Tarpon are a blast, it is a treat to pick up the other target species even though they are not a predominant fish down in the lower Keys.  Set up on a nice cut and would flip a small white Gurgler/Schminnow at any passing fish.  Caught my first Snook on a fly as it made its move on the way out to the flats and a really nice Red that actually popped my fly as it just sat there since I was too busy shooing away the mosquitoes.

For this type of conditions, the fly rod is a much better tool than even my weedless rigged soft plastics.  The top water flies sit right up top without needing any movement plus with an exposed hook, you don't miss as many fish, especially Tarpon.  I probably miss half of the Tarpon when they engulf the soft plastic and then spit it back out before my mind even registers to set the hook.  Probably need to step up from my 8wt to a 9wt for a little more backbone as the 8wt feels like it is on its verge of no return when trying to stop them from getting back into the mangroves.

Probably the funnest type of Summer fishing that I do.
