Battle fish still killin' it. Sorry for the radio silence, Fishin' has been slow lately due to the jacked up weatherwe have had EVERY WEEKEND. Went on foot last Sunday...Slow and **** weather. Did see some guys haul in some reds on their boat but could not get good pictures. I heard him say the one below was 37." They hauled in like 3 more, on of which was about the same size. Those are the rocks that are on the island in the middle of the intercoastal @Mayport and Atlantic, but you cant get there on foot. I think it was high tide afternoon. They were using artificial and were only there for like 1.5 hrs. Probably just gave someone's spot away.
Cant wait till the weather gets better and I can launch the Yak. In the meantime... DOES ANY ONE KNOW A SPOT THAT'S HITTING THAT I CAN MAKE IT TO ON FOOT? I just need a general location as I know most of the spots in the area. I would like a place where I can got to for like 3 hours and catch a couple slots. It's been a while and my creek spot for reds was dead the last couple times that I went out there, so I'd rather try something new/rediscovered.
I was thinking Vilano Beach/Guana preserve or Driftwood beach off Heckscher but that is like a all day thing and I have been working like crazy. Anybody been to those locations lately? Would be nice to stay closer...
FYI, Since November 13, 2020 we've caught 28 Slot Reds, dozens of undersize Reds, one 29" oversize red and one 22" Flounder on the D.O.A. C.A.L. Shad Paddletail with the Tsunami Jig heads. 25 of those reds were on the Walmart Tsunami Sealed Barrier II 4000 Reel and Rod combo $49.88. Thousands of casts and the Reel and Rod combo has been flawless. 20 lb. Daiwa Braid, 15 lb. Berkley Big Game green mono leader.
My partner starting fishing about a year ago and she has caught several undersize and slot reds and her PB is a 27" red you saw in one of the videos.
The Technique: Find the fish and you will catch them. Minn Kota Terrova trolling motor moving along creek banks and casting, slow jerky retrieve, let it rest on bottom expect a hit when you start jerk retrieve again. I get most my hits when I reach down to adjust the trolling motor. Cover a lot of water. Most of these fish were caught in 1-2 feet of water. They are cruising the banks and sometimes sitting near edges where mud is flowing on strong tide movement. Where I fish is not important, if it is a navigable creek reds are there. Cover a lot of water, make hundreds of casts. Good Luck.
I'm back. after a little dry spell. New lures, Bomber Crankbait with circle hooks Chartreuse. And a surprise catch confirming what I've seen surfacing in the creeks.
On fly. Saw the fish cruising, presented the popper 3 times with no interest. Fish ghosted in a slightly deeper water but was moving to a mangrove point. Blind casted the fly to the point and sure enough it was there. Used the white craft fur popper.
21" and 18" again today, threw back three just under 18" and lost one at the boat that was 25" plus. all St Johns Orange Park Lodge just north of their pier. Not near docks, out in 4-6 feet of water. Yo-Zuri and electric chicken paddletail.
