Venice teenager drowns off Stump Pass

The kid was fishing with friends in about 40 feet of water when they were unable to retrieve their anchor.
He dived to try to retrieve it and never surfaced.
So sad.

I have been diving for over a half century both as a free diver and Scuba.
Many young divers i talk too at the ramp have no clue about Shallow Water
Blackout. Before this pandemic i would give them a 5 minute lesson on the
warning signs and when it usually occurs. I have blacked out twice and my
    rescue is for another discussion.

This is a very sad story.  This is not the first life lost due to a stuck anchor.  It is always best to carry a knife and small emergency anchor.  Cut the anchor line and mark the spot. Attach the emergency anchor for the ride home. Come back with proper equipment and personnel when weather conditions allow and retrieve your gear.  An anchor is not worth a life or lives when you consider one can be had for $50 or less.
