Everglades 3/10 Report

Launched out of the ranger station in EC about 8 AM. Lost something big on my 2nd cast (redfish or snook, couldn't tell because it hit far from kayak) and then went to retief because the oysters were fraying my leader... then realized I had no knife and had to paddle the 1.2 miles back to get my knife. By the time I got back the tide was low and the fish gone. Explored around for a few hours trying to get into the backwaters (water level was so low even the kayak had issues) and finally did,  only to find dirty water and no bite except for a small jack and a huge ladyfish. Tide started coming in again - and strong - so I went back to my first spot and was catching fish like crazy, except all were under slot. I must have caught a dozen 16"-17" redfish. Caught one that went 18" but threw it back in hopes of catching a bigger one, never happened. Lost a huge trout at the side of the boat, only fish of size I had close to the boat all day.  When the water flow stopped the bite ended and I called it a day.

All in all not a bad day except for the size of the fish. Caught 5 species (redfish, trout, snook, ladyfish, jack) and no catfish.

Got back around 7 and laid down for a nap and woke up at 1 AM lol, thus the post in the middle of the night.

I fish those oyster flats across the bay from EC ranger station all the time. If you keep at it in the spots where you are catching the under slot reds, eventually you will get an overslot. They are not schooled up with the small ones, but they cruise by all the same areas. I caught a bunch from 26-29 back in Nov/Dec. Most of the reds moved out in Jan/Feb, but they seem to be passing through again.

It's a Good spot. Go to the bigger Flowage as it fans out into the bay and you can catch good Trout away from the bars.
I use to live in Chok. and it was a Go To for my  visitors.
