Anybody go after any Mangrove snappers on a fly rod? What type of things to throw? Leader set up,etc.?

Clousers , Chatreuse over white is as good as any. Mostly you dont target them but catch them incidental to snook reds or sea trout casting to mangroves. If you want to target them, chum grass flats or fish lighted docks at night.

Mangrove snapper live in a variety of different habitats, and there are countless ways to target them in each one. I like to anchor upcurrent of structure in 30-40' of water in early fall. I chum them up with chunks of spanish sardines.( Some would argue that's cheating, I honestly have no opinion, I simply call it entertainment. )I use a 9wt with a type 6 fast sink head and a very heavy running line. I use 50lb braided mono. Not because I need 50lb mono, it's just alot easier to clear on fast/angry fish. It's an issue. I'm usually doing this at night, it can get hairy. I'm using #2 clousers with minimal flash (color doesn't seem to be an issue, and you'll want some relatively heavy lead eyes.). Cast from the bow, and let it drift back. Wait a solid minute before beginning a slow, constant, hand over hand retrieve. I use 8' of straight 16lb flourocarbon, they are definitely leader shy, and there's bycatch you want to be able to break off quickly. And leave if the sharks move in. It really sucks having to pull anchor and relocate, but the sharks generally don't go away.
