Attic insulation: Rolls vs blown in?

KeysNoleKeysNole Posts: 541 Officer
Due to a unique situation we are replacing all of our attic insulation. It is already removed. We previously had rolls of R30, and now have the option of rolls vs blown in. It looks like rolls are triple the price, but we are able to get them at no additional cost to us. I am told blown in can go all over the place in a storm, and rolls lose their insulation ratings quicker/easier.

What do the HVAC guys say?

    Not an hvac guy.
I would install fiberglass R-38/40 for the first 2-4 feet from the wall ( and baffle), and blow in the rest. Wind does push cellulose insulation away from the walls over time.

Cellulose sucks, it compresses over time, and turns to dust. if you go blown in use fiberglass, minimum of R38

Thanks for the replies. Also looking into the foam that sprays directly onto the underside of the roof, but those reviews seem hit and miss.

Icynene works very well, the problems are usually caused by bad installation. If you decide to make your house that tight you will probably need an air exchanger too.

I've got both in my attic, original blown in and the thickest stuff rolled on top by my wife a number of years ago during the heat of summer(bless her little heart) because she wanted more.......2400 sq. ft. in Boynton...electric bill last month was $68 and change.

If you have a 68 dollar electric bill you either don't use A/C or your stealing power.

If you have FPL for your electric provider, look into their rebate program for attic insulation -

Careful with blown.  It touches your a/c outlet boxes and duct work and make condensation.  As for icynene. you will HAVE TO put some sort of moisture removal system in the attic; i.e. a dehumidifier(s) and or cut holes in the duct work to "condition" the attic space.  Have seen people not do anything and the trusses will mold over, causing structural issues

Yep, no AC needed in Dec. Summer rates with AC at 76 or 77 run about $140.

I have a vacation home and in December the electric bill was $106.00. I LOL because I have never received a bill that low. House was vacant, no A/C , lights etc. However I did have the water heater on and pool pump on a clock. Occupied it runs $400 summer and winter.

You cook with gas or elec? You use a gas dryer or elec? Maybe hang them out? You have solar water heater, maybe gas?
I have a neighbor who has a low bill with 3 A/C units and a pool. But he also has a roof full of solar panels. Electric and water.
This sound like you?  If not you need to give that wife of yours a extra kiss.

Are you guys comparing just electric bills?

My current house has an electric bill of $100 to $120 a month almost year round. It is on a well ans septic, no gas, So that is just electric. I need to insulate the attic as well and will get it below $100.

My old house was $150 to $200, but included electric, water, gas, sewage, and trash. The electric portion was about $100 a month.

What is the cost of blown in insulation?

It would be a pain to do roll in my current house due to the only access being in a closet. But I need to insulate my attic. There are exterior side vents they could run a hose through to blow it in with one guy in the attic.

Batt and blow a few inches over to fill the gaps. The batts will also keep the blown from moving as much. Spray foam is so expensive most people never live in a house long enough to see savings.

Cook with electric but only two big meals per week, then live on leftovers. No solar but have water heater on timer and some sort of FPL regulator on that and AC....whole house fan that is great to suck in cool evening air in spring and fall to cool when outside air is lower temp than house, run for about an hour and that's enough. Wife is the best, has always made more money than me and I have always played and fished as much as I have wanted!
