  Congrats on the move. I moved here just shy of a year ago following military retirement  and can tell you the fisherie is not destroyed. Now, I’m unable to speak to how good it used to be, but we have been pleasantly surprised at how good it is. I too heard the negative chatter, but didn’t let it deter us, as my wife and I have chased fish inshore and off from our bay boat. I’m an optimist at heart so I say come on down and be prepared to enjoy a some great fishing. Safe travels on your move as well.

  I'm an inshore guy. I have an 18ft Action Craft. I'm trying to figure out what to do for fishing trips. Can you fish in the water right across from Melbourne proper? Looks like a lot of docks and some sandy flats.

  Welcome to Brevard County, I've lived  in the Melbourne area since the early 80's. The fishing here is fantastic and you have a perfect boat to enjoy a lot of diversity. The really nice thing about this area is that we have a lot of decent ramps that will allow you to explore different areas. Mosquito Lagoon, Port Canaveral, Cocoa Beach areas around the golf course, Mather's Bridge, Sebastian Inlet, Fort Pierce the list goes on and on.

  We also have some great action along the beaches, tarpon, triple tail, big red fish, kingfish......

  My favorite type of inshore fishing is skipping artificial lures up under docks for Snook, reds and trout.

  The local tackle shops are very friendly and are willing to give you advice on what's biting and how to target them.

  We also have a number of water front restaurants/bars that you will able to access, many are free to dock and some have live music.

  Probably the best thing about this area are the locals, very friendly and you'll have no problem meeting people.

  Arsinek, I'm a life-long resident here.  Actually.... I'm a refugee from Fort Lauderdale,.. but I grew up on the Indian River.  I can tell you the fishery has definitely changed, and not for the better.  The last 30-35 years has seen the most change if you ask  me.  Methinks it's a combination of several different things....

  More people equals more waste... just might be the simplest explanation.  Golf courses contribute.  Runoff contributes.  Septic tanks...ditto.

  I don’t know what these guys are talking about.  I would say the fishery is about 10% of what it was.  I remember fishing with my grandpa off the banks anywhere and caught reds and trout nonstop.  Those places today are mud and catfish.  If 10% is awesome that speaks to how awesome it was.  Still fish but unless your a guide enjoy catching one or two decent fish a trip and the rest will be trash fish.

  Could be. I'm from St. Augustine. We are slowly filling in and will be like South Florida at some point, one town/city will flow into the next with no gaps in between. I'm sure the fishing will suffer as a result.

  Born here. This place used to be really nice before Viera was developed. Water was clear everywhere and driftgrass would cover the shorelines. There were were coquina bottoms, that are covered in muck now. The beaches were lined with many diverse shells, and you would easily get your feet/knees cut on the wormrock/coquina if you ventured into the surf. The seafood was incredible and this community was very dependant on it.
  It's not completely dead yet, but it's truly not what it was or going to get any better. There's alot of development in S. Brevard that's similar to what Viera looked like before the Dudas sold out. The Platt land/St.Johns Heritage Pkwy is going to be the next wave of continuous muck. It's a shame we let it happen. For the record, river fishing just ain't great and the fish that have survived are struggling. Should have been here 30-40 years ago.

  I don't really fish anymore to be honest, I get a few charters offshore each year and do some off days in my smaller boat.  I put in for lottery hunts all over the USA.  If you get drawn it's the last good representation of what the outdoors was IMO.  If your not in the know, check out Texas Drawn Hunts....**** if you get it!

  Hunting never appealed to me which is kind of strange considering its so similar to fishing.

  
  

  I'm thinking bass fishing would be the next best thing to replace inshore saltwater fishing. I actually just started tinkering with it the past couple months.

  Pretty much the same all over the state. Nothings like it used to be, but still better than most other states on the eastern seaboard.

  Fishing in Florida is @#$%#! don't move stay where you are at because anywhere is way better then down here....LOL sorry i had to say that...LOL... this is Florida and we are liucky to be in a state with the all the types of fishing we have on our door step... Yes it isnt what it was years back... but heck that goes with everything... you adapt and carry on, or you can be like some of the newies i have run into that fall back into that same old tired excuse that fishing sucks... most of the time those people don't put in the time, and expect to catch something on every catch... Florida fishing is great IMO, but it is still fishing.... some days are Great and then there are days that we get our rears handed to us... that's why its called fishing....and once you start to target certain fish thats when you will start to pull your hair out at time... LOL...when you first start out...put in your time/ask lots of questions/talk to positive people and enjoy everyday you are out on the water.....I fish way back in the early 70s and lots of things have change... yes its not like it use to be, but it still alot better then other places....have fun and enjoy your time here..
