I would make sure you have good communications capability when your out where you want to fish, And safety equipment. Not to mention adequate fuel and a sound boat and motor. VHF and cell phones won't cut it once you get more than 25 miles or so.
Even though VHF signals are "line of sight", The Coast Guard station at St Petersburg has a very tall tower for extended range. While boat to boat range is only about 15 miles, I have reached the Coast Guard from 70nm away offshore from Crystal River.
