When I lived in Key West, I new a guy that ran a business making Crawfish traps called the Trap factory. It was located in the old coal warehouse just south of Mallory Square behind the old Customs building. One day on the news I heard of a FBI arrest of a fellow named James Sims that was owner of the Trap factory. Come to find out he was living in Key West under a alias (I knew him as John and was a very nice guy) and was a fairly high ranking member of the Winterrhill Gang and evidently on the lam for years. After the arrest I heard he did five years of prison time and after his release, no one ever saw him again. He either had money stashed and fled to the tropics or got bumped off. If you never heard of the Winterhill gang, google it. That's were Whitey came into play.
One cool thing is that David Allan Coe rented the other side of the warehouse and rehearsed for his tours and I got to listen to him as well as party with him and the band. He had a neat tour bus with big steer horns on the front. He was living on Big Pine at the time.

I watched Black Mass the other night.  It showed how crooked the FBI is protecting the crooks for money & info.

Finally went to a prison where he didn't have all the protection he needed.

To little to late if you ask me. I used to work construction in Boston in the 80's and worked on rehabbing some of South Boston housing projects. There was a small store called the D Street Deli and every once in a while the black limo would pull up and the store owner would get in for a few minutes get back out and the limo would take off. I always assumed it was Whitey collecting protection money or maybe the store owner was in the mob as well. Whitey's brother Billy is a crook too. He just figured out how to do it legally collecting 2 pensions from the state. 1 from the state house and 1 from UMass totaling $208,000.00 per year. Not bad for a public servant. The current pension for a US president is $203,200.00. Billy lived right next door to the mother and the FBI raided the mothers house and found a stash of guns there but of course Billy knew nothing about it. Billy even claimed he had never heard of the winter hill gang when interviewed by the news. What a joke.
