Rescued Red

10 Oct 2018...  Wabasso/Vero...Red Rescue...Water quality, poor at best, a few areas have fairly clean water.  Ran North to the ICW channel, little dicey heading straight South into the wind, from the ramp.  Bait was solid from about 200 feet North of the causeway to the turn South.  No big crashes or splashes.  Heard a comment that the fish were under the bait.  Gave up on that after 3 short Trout.  Blew it on the North Sister flat, hooked into an oversized Trout on a highly modified Pop R should stick with 4 # test.  Put on too much pressure with 8 # and pulled the hook.  Missed 2 more, bad cadence.  South to Vero Spent the day pitching Mangrove pockets.  Nothing but Snook.  Beginning to think that my boat has a short Snook and Snapper fixation.  On the way back to the cove, noticed an orange float, check it out later.  Skipped 2 Pompano, too small to be worth chasing   Working back out after way too many short Snook, work back in to check out the float.  Cast and hooked the line, trouble, took off, peeling drag.  Did not go far, hooked again, same thing.  Moved right to the edge of the Mangroves, worked in with the boat, grabbed the float and pulled it in.  Hooked to a 22 inch Red, quick picture and release.   Whoever lost it needs to invest in better line.  Back to Johns Island, bait stacked at the culvert, current ripping.  Hooked a 22 inch Snook.  Back in the ditch, watched a big stick moving against the flow, way over size Gar. Started pitching the Mangroves, 15 # braid, 20 # leader and Baby Vudu Shrimp.  Sheepie, at least 20 inches chewing on a root.  Flip cast, feel nothing, faint twitch in the line, lift up, good hook set.   Harder to stop than a Snook, max pressure, pulled the hook.  Retie and start on the docks.  Cats and short Snapper.  Another line twitch, lift up, solid connection, another semi, could not keep away from the dock. Leader broke, new 30 # leader.  Next one came to the boat, small at 15 inches.  All players released for future encounters.
