Keep breaking Ugly stiks- not covered under warranty - need to try another brand

Circle-HookCircle-Hook Posts: 503 Officer

This last trip took out 2 ugly stiks -  warranty says "failure" due to materials or workmanship-  well I can not claim that for these 2 rods- BIG shark got one, under side of the house got the other one - so warranty useless-  so no real point in sticking to Ugly stiks

What ya'll using in a $100 saltwater rod?

SO you broke your rods and can't go under warrantee so you want to buy more expensive rods to break?  Am I missing something?  Ugly Stiks are difficult to break - I'm guessing another brand would be gone as well.

There's a few fly rod companies that have a no questions asked warranty, but I don't know of any spinning rod warranties like that right now.
Star and Teramar used to do that, but not anymore.  Best to go talk to your local tackle shop and ask them which ones you can walk in and exchange there in person.  They might have one.  It's how new rod companies get popular real quick so they might have one.
Tarpon... everything else is just bait.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. You broke one on the underside of your house and your asking for recommendations. Stay away from the underside of the house LOL. Ugly sticks are tough and warranties are weak.

If you are breaking Ugly Sticks, I can't think of much you won't break.  It will just be more expensive.

Yep.... You will be very unhappy because you will break one of the $100 rods right away if you are breaking ugly sticks....

Maybe....you need to pay a bit more attention while handling your rods

I use a bunch of Ugly Stiks and never had one break. And I am pretty rough on them.

That had to be a pretty unique situation you were trying to pull that shark from.

I've never broken an Ugly Stik, and I have many. I also have many broken rods in my garage (Crowder, Star, & etc).

TFO had a great warranty but it has been 4 yrs or so since I had one replaced or dealt with them period, not sure what their current policy is.

That’s funny. I’ve have or have had lots of high end rods. I’ve never broken one while fishing. If you’re breaking Crowder, Star, and etc, you’re doing something wrong. It’s not the rods.

My anglers have broken a rod or two (or three) over the years.  Since I’m in my 22nd year as a full time guide that’s a few rods.  Every one I built myself - so I had to build another to replace it... My point is that for the money you’ll be hard pressed to beat an Ugly for toughness.  If it were me that’s exactly what I’d replace them with...

That's one of the fly rod companies I was referring to earlier... $35, send it in, new rod... no questions.

Shimano Terramars ( only terramar) are almost impossible to break. I tried to break one for a warranty claim and it looked like the old ugly stick commercials when the mad wife tried to break the husbands rod. Not my favorite rods, but pretty nice and indestructible

Nobody here that has ever owned an ugly stick...is going to think anything but it was " Operator error" ....

Just see how long a nice brittle graphite blank holds up....and get back to us...LOL

Hey, I caught a 167 lb dolphin after running my 20’ Epic with trip 350 Yamaha’s WOT for 300 miles. And I only used 31 gallons of gas. Round trip. So there. :)

Ugly sticks have cheated out lately on a few things, not like they use to but for the price, ya can't really complain too much. Buy another ugly stick and take care of it as if its one of those 100$ rods. Maybe go into the ugly stick tiger lite series.

stronger than an ugly stick I'd have to say your next step is a broom stick lol

I used to be a TFO fan for both fly rods and spinning roads but the spinning rods have crappy eyes that break and they will not replace them under the warranty, they will only mail you some more crappy ones to put on yourself.  I had two break on one rod recently, never in my 50+ years of fishing have I had eyes to just break.

I won't stop buying ugly sticks until I learn how to stop breaking the tips off in the truck door..  I'd love to buy a nice rod.  But I won't :.(
Funny, I've never broken a rod fishing either..

My everyday rod is a vintage ugly stick. And by everyday, I mean everyday.  I have caught everything from reds and snook to big turtles and alligators and no breakage of any kind. Just found a blank in a yard sale and had new eyes put on it. There are a bunch of them out there if you look around.

I don’t know of any rod company that will warranty eyes. I know g loomis doesn’t
