Trout Fishing near Atlanta

Heading up to Atlanta for a wedding this weekend and would like to sneak away for a little and try for rainbow/brown trout. Can anyone point me in the right direction for bank/wade fishing north of Atlanta?

Contact unicoioutfitters in Helen for the upper Chattahoochee and/or the Fish Hawk for Chattahoochee tailwater fishing, below Lake Lanier.

Public shore access is tough to find in Georgia; very little public right of way compared to here in Florida.  As above, look into one of the outfitters along the upper 'Hooch.  Other alternative would be to rent a kayak and do a float along the upper 'Hooch.  If you want trout, do the Highway 17 - Highway 255 run.  Wildwood outfitters does kayak rental and shuttle service; used them every time I hit the upper 'Hooch back in the day and loved them.  You'll mostly use the kayak to get from shoal to shoal and wade while you fish.

As an alternative, **** on those 9" stocked trout and chase shoal bass with your flyrod.  115 to Duncan Bridge Road run has shoal bass, redeye bass, largemouth and spotted bass.  Might even stumble into a striped bass on that stretch this time of year.

Im just taking my micro spinning reel that I use for crappie. Looks like my two best options would be Jones Bridge Park or Island Ford next to the State park. Thank you for your replies.

When we were younger we used to sit on the discharge side of the dam.  We'd picnic and fish and have a good time.  Just make sure you're not in the water or near it if they let some water out.  They'll give you warnings though.  I remember being a kid and amazed at the water as it was flowing when they opened it up.

I grew up in Atlanta. My go to spot was White Water Creek Park on the hooch.. it’s actually in the city proper. Not only is there decent trout fishing in the runs and main part of the river near the main entrance, but there’s some decent fishing for shoal bass, largemouth and the chattahoochee’s infamous smallmouth/largemouth/redeye hybrids. Head up river and fish the rock shoals. Just like down here, fish the ambush points in the runs, deep pools, behind rocks. On spinning gear, I’d go with a rooster tail for the trout. For bass, spinner baits, wacky rigged senko or a jointed rapala. If you want more specific info, call the Fish Hawk in buck head. Good luck!

You can also fish south of the Buford Dam. I believe the state record brown trout was caught down there. Just keep an eye on the water discharge, that can turn into a bad situation quickly if you’re wading.
