Weston canals -- exotics (and a lesson)

I read somewhere on here someone was looking for exotics and someone relied "try any canal in Weston". Well, I put that to the test and fished the tiny canal behind the hotel I was staying at. If you look at the map, you can see exactly how tiny it is. Anyway, I was throwing some worms and then a Rat-L-Trap and not really doing any good. I noticed when the breeze blew, though, the water would light up and I finally figured out the fish were smacking berries falling from a banyan tree.

I took a berry off the ground, put it on a hook and caught a Mayan cichlid every single time. Great fight on light tackle, by the way. It was perfect fishing for my daughter and I. So, the takeaway here is to always pay attention to what's going on around you because you never know what they may be biting that day.
