Gag grouper fishing isn't what it used to be. Here's some pictures of my mom, grandmom and a friend of theirs after an 8 hour trip on a head boat out of Cortez in the late 50;s. Don't catch many gags that size on a Middle Grounds trip now.
Common Sense can't be bought, taught or gifted, yet it is one of the few things in life that is free, and most refuse to even attempt to possess it. - Miguel Cervantes
Now wait a cotton pickin minuet!! There were no GPS, color bottom machines and triple motor center console boats back then. No way you could catch fish!!!😏
I was looking at some old pictures from when my inlaws first moved to Tierra Verde back in the early 80's. The grouper/redfish/trout they would catch in their back yard was unbelievable. I've fished the same dock with the kids and now we're lucky if we catch a catfish?
I have a picture of my Grandfather and his much younger son than my Dad on the dock of a Daytona head boat in the late 50's.with the catch. If you came in with this haul today it would make headlines. I've never caught a thing on those same type of boats in the same area.
It's not if you want to run 50+ miles to get them. :-( You used to be able to do that within site of land.
That was my point. I know you can run to 200 ft in the gulf and catch some nice fish. I'm talking Daytona head boat in sight of land. Nothing more than a boat ride today.

I hate to tell you but used to died, you used to be able to buy gas for $0.69 a gallon. A ford truck Used to cost $2500 brand new. And you Used To be able kill a limit of quail within walking distance of the house.
Short of closing all fishing both recreational and commercial down for 10+ years, and I mean closing it all down, you can kiss those days goodbye.
Fishing has been made to easy now. I have said before, modern electronics and reliable boats/outboards have a huge pressure on fish stocks, especially inshore.
My grandpas fish story was he drove from Homosassa to St. Pete in the 50's to go out on a headboat don't know which one. When the Capt. got close to the area they wanted to fish the deckhand would drop a window weight with a ball of wax on the the end to find the structure.
I've heard the dragging wax method from the old timers as well. Electronics has come a long way. In 1966 my Dad bought a 30ft Chris-Craft constellation. It had a compass and an Antiquated depth finder. We lived in Fort Lauderdale then I just moved down from Tennessee and my dad was a Lake boat guy .My mom was always trying to get him to go to Bimini but he wouldn't do it. Back then most people only went to Bimini in a group out of Fort Lauderdale.
