Orange lake 05/20/18 the invasion..

Had a bass club tournament up there Sunday. It was a wet one , a very wet one.. I haven't fished it for about 8-10 years and things are way different from what I remember. Water level is good and it looks like they have done a LOT of weed harvesting. Water was dark and not the cloudy color I recall but reasonably clear.

My day didn't start too well and I only had a large mudfish in the well to show for the first two hours of fishing. Yes , mudfish. We have a "trashfish" pot , biggest non bass takes the money. I was flipping and throwing a spinnerbait with no luck. I just couldn't get a hook in what was biting ? I have a 1 oz weight and a 5/0 heavy hook in a big tube bait and started catching...warmouth..  A lot of warmouth !

I tried to shake them off and still hooked them. Those little buggers are aggressive and apparently , hungry. I'm no stranger to warmouth and like them. Very cool fish and when bass fishing, occasionally catch one or two. I bet I could have caught 50 yesterday if I wanted. Never seen them so thick. May be due to the weed harvesting or spawning ? At the ramp the other guys all had the same story. We caught them on rattletraps, spinnerbaits, worms ,topwaters and of course flippin heavy baits in cover.  Also lots of specks were caught on traps and I got two on a rapala.

Bass.. Not as good. At the end of the day I managed 3 by pitching a worm on mid lake pad clumps so got 3rd place and was in the money. My mudfish was 7lb 14oz.. Got beat by a 8.0. Darn it. Big bass was 6lb 14oz and we had 3 over 5lbs weighed. No one bought in a limit.

Warmouth invasion has begun.  Be very careful .. ;)

We caught some big warmouth earlier this spring while crappie fishing there too.  I heard a few others' stories of the same thing happening.

I talked to Travis with fwc he been doing electric samples there this past month. The bass are coming back. Low numbers so far but quality fish. But I can tell you right now it's the best speck lake in country. That usually a good sign for things to come.

Well dang man, I would have brought you a dry towel and a toddy.
If it wasn't rain it would have been airboats to deal with on a Sunday(NOTHING against airboats)
Love the warmouth, we have plenty.
Just bought momma a new truck from someone that fishes with your club I believe. Joey Key??
    nice guy, treated us good.

Throw back . Used to just throw muds and gar on deck but they slime it up and loose weight. Hate to kill them anyway.
Seen A member win 140 bucks with a 9" pickerel once. He had the only fish and the pot was a carry over.

4ward , he must be in a different club ? I fish Rodbenders. They been around since the 70's in Inverness.

Congrats. Sunday was pretty nasty in Gainesville. I remember when we were kids catching warmouth around docks with beetlespins. Good times.

I think the bass in orange took a hard hit during the drought. I agree that the panfishing seems fantastic there.

He mentioned an upcoming tournament on Orange, thought they might be related.
He showed me a pic of a 11# from last year. I live here and cant figure that one out.
Then again I do not have the patience and flat out work ethic that most successful Bass guys have.

Congradz on yer 3rd place! Somehow you always seem to sneak into the $$$!! Warmouths are Little Red Eye'd Demons! They remind me a lot of rock bass up north! Just as nasty and range about the same size! Matched with light tackle their a lot of fun! That reminds me>> Louie, we need to do another light  (#2 & #3 weight) fly fishing trip for panfish again, it's a blast!! It's been a while!!
