Got a chance to go twice this weekend, and it was great. Weather couldn't have been better. On Saturday, a buddy of mine and I took our 7 year olds and my 11 yr old out to the reef. It was a good day. We consistently caught fish, which kept the kids from demanding to head home every 10 minutes. By the end of the session, we ended up with a mess of Yellow tail, 2 muttons (my favorite), and 2 nice big spanish macks for the smoker.
Sunday another buddy and I headed back to the reef. Great current, but the water was so clear we could almost see the bottom in 40'. We had a decent amount of yellow tails (3 keepers) and lost a mack or 2. I also caught a nice throw-back red grouper. It was hot and there was 0 breeze, so we decided to head off and see if we could grab a mahi or 2. Went out about 6 miles and found a patch. We had some chum left from the reef so we dunked it along with a pilchard and a shrimp. In about 5 minutes, 2 phins show up. Always an exciting sight to see those yellow fins swoop by. They checked out the shrimp first, they passed ( I think the hook was a little to large- my bad) and zeroed in on the pilchard. They gave him a chase, wandered off and then came back again to harass him. Wouldn't take it, but kept gobbling up the chum. We sacrificed a pilchard for chunk bait, and as soon as these hit the water we were doubled up. Once on board, they were not huge- 22" and 26", but it seems like it has been early fall since a mahi crossed the gunnel, so we were both jazzed.
Headed in and cleaned fish and the boat. Totally sun burned and smiling this morning. Dinner is going to be good tonight.
