I have been using shrimp as my main sheepshead go-to bait. With decent results. Do any of you use anything different that might work better? I'm usually fishing the rocks around docks and bridges.
Never caught em on anything but shrimp. But I know people use clams as bait and are pretty successful as far as i know.
Shrimp or fiddler crab. I did catch a keeper on a mirrodine but I associate that with luck.
Shrimp and fiddlers
Fiddlers reduce bycatch if your target is Sheephead
Oysters or sandfleas for me. You can buy the small mesh bags for the oysters or use pieces of nylon stockings. You'll catch 10-1 on oysters over any other bait.
Sandfleas, oyster crabs, and fiddler crabs. You can get em for free, don't waste your money on shrimp.
I like using Barnacles, Fiddler Crabs and Periwinkles.
know what a tube worm is,it is a worm that crawls inside new mangroves shoots.
They are very thin and barely cover the hook. They are a dull red in color.
Only problem with tube worms is the mangrove shoots are pulled up at
low tide and they literally dug up the shoots for miles around.Only one
tubeworm per shoot.
The black mangrove/wharf crabs you find on mangroves and dock pilings seem to work better for me than fiddler crabs. The sheepies seem to ingest the whole thing and hold onto them longer which helps in getting a good hookset.
