EPIRB question?

Why would anyone get this over an acr PLB? Unless you just like monthly subscription fees

It is a GPS with sat phone (text) capabilities and SOS feature. The new monthly plans can be done on a month to month setup so for the 9 months a year it would probably be in a drawer - no fees. The GPS works whether registered or not. My Garman GPS was purchased in about 1998 so a back up wouldn't hurt. I have about 250 waypoints stored in it, some I would hate to lose. The EPIRB I was given is a ACR. Top quality product but at three pounds not what I want in a backpack. Be happy to continue this into :Horseterritory:blowkiss. I knew I should have posted the original question in Hunt Camp instead of Off Topic:bangheadlive and learn.

Sat phone. I also think there are some affordable little units that are EPIRB-like. Get one of those for hiking.

Boat goes down, and they do, folks gonna need help. Probably best not to clutter that resource for dudes hanging on to cooler lids.
    I agree.
I am glad to only be a bird hunter with bird dogs...being a shooter or dog handler or whatever other niche exists to separate appears to generate far too much about which to worry.

I hope this will finally put this to rest. My EPIRB and someone else's PLB use exactly the same SARSAT (satellite and rescue aided tracking) satellites. My attachment will explain/show the system and show that my activating a distress call near the Devil's Tower in WY will have ZERO effect on a guy clinging to a cooler by his sunken boat off Miami Beach. My only decision now is whether to carry the three # unit or spring for a lighter PLB. If I can convince a companion to put the EPIRB in his backpack it is an easy choice. Happy New Year to all.

Check out the N/E section under "Missing Mayport Boaters"

Having a little trouble with the attachment - may add it as an additional post to this thread :huh

    last time - maybe:crossed

Just google SARSAT - it will be the second item listed and be in the correct readable size. Worth the time if truly interested. Same satellites, same computers that use GPS coordinates to notify nearest responders to the declared emergency. Same call center for PLBs and EPIRBs.

Arguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon... No matter how good you are, the bird is going to crap on the board and strut around like it won anyway.

Better yet let this thread die. Trying to stay ahead in this chess match and already have a snappy retort for what I guess is coming. To set everyone at ease before taking my EPIRB into a wilderness area as a last ditch parachute I'll log on to the NOAA web site with my registered user name and password to update the unit's registration from the listed vessel to the other use option. Everybody should then be tickled especially any first responders that will have our location (+/- 50')so no search will be needed if we are lost, ill or injured. Can't believe the legs this thread had. Should have been done on post #4..

Something like this? If so, I'm sure I can find some more old ones laying around in junk closet.
