Home Keys General Fishing & The Outdoors

Wednesday -offshore

Not much to report work got in the way all morning but decided to make an afternoon run offshore. Took a new Tanacom 1000 electric to try out. On the way out to 600' we watch for signs of life but did nit see much. It was a little rougher than the wife likes so we only made two drifts. Got hooked up and started hand cracking felt a good pull on other end. Then started with electric and fish was coming until a flip of his tail and came unbuttoned. I checked the reel and the drag was on lock down, so it probably just yanked the hook out of its mouth. :banghead
Next time will be prepared - lesson learned
Picked up and headed south looking for birds or weeds. Only thing we saw were tuna birds on Bonita. We trolled them and pick up a bone head for bait. Out 25 miles and no sign of weeds scattered or in a mat or line. :banghead

Was a little strange out there, only saw one other boat, no weeds, very few birds, no debris, no fish.

You just always hope to find something to troll to or around or the obvious birds busting but it seems more often to find nothing, sounds like that is what happened to you.....at least you picked up some fresh bonita for bait. I am guessing most boaters were out lobstering and not fishing yesterday but who knows, thanks for the report.

I was a little surprised at how different dolphin fishing offshore Marathon is different than Jupiter. We were just down there and found several huge floating logs, a barrel, and a weedline you dream about here in Jupiter, all with no fish on them. Every fish we caught were under feeding birds. Maybe that was just my limited experience there, but in Jupiter, if you find that kind of debris and weedlines you are almost guaranteed to see a mahi. Almost....

you got a little action, that's good, and thanks for inspiring me to stay in. Makologic- every day is different in the ocean, whether in the keys or Jupiter. You just happened to go out on a slow day. A few weeks ago you could have caught them blindfolded I guarantee it

I agree....when we were in Marathon at the beginning of the month, we were 2 for 2 on finding dolphin on debris. They were there and they were thick.....and they were small (but tons of fun to catch)!!

Just a post to show how much it can change in one day. Prior day we were throwing back 25" phins because we had been catching them on the three previous days. Not everyday is a box gaffer mahi, a snowy and some muttons.
I like to post the good and bad because there is no guarantee and that is what makes if fun.
When you have to put in the work and learn new things it makes the accomplishments even more satisfying.
There may be some days where we may not even catch bonitas - but we will be back out again the next day.
Back to my other job for a few - but can't wait to get back out here
    Tight lines all

    True....true....

I'll be back soon to find out. Love it down there. Way, way less crowded. Love Jupiter but it is starting to look like a Walmart parking lot every day I go out.

    Mak & AOK,
I've been thinking about running to the keys to try it out. Where would you recommend launching a boat, and also staying for a night or two? I want things to be secure. Have heard some horror stories about stuff getting ripped off.

    Pura Vida!

We are fairly new to the area so others would have better recommendations for places stay.
There are a few small motels on the water with dockage right in front of the units. Most houses are weekly rentals.
We relocated from Melbourne Beach area because of the many fishing options.
Have not heard of any wide spread problems in the Marathon area but nowhere is immune from a random theft. The are a few boat ramps on gulf side only a couple ocean side so it would depend on where you are staying.
Summertime generally is calmer but with only two days the wind could blow out the offshore stuff.
