An ex-marine is believed to be the first fully-active double amputee police officer in the United States.

Afghanistan vet Matias Ferreira was sworn in to New York's Suffolk County Police Department on Friday.

Ferreira lost both his legs while serving in Afghanistan but hasn't let the injury keep him from his dream of becoming a police officer.

He was even elected class president by his peers at the academy.

The 28-year-old told Fox News that he dreamed of being a police officer as a kid. He even joked that if he breaks a leg on the job, he just has to pull another out of the trunk of his car.

Ferreira told Newsday, "I'm just really eager and excited to prove myself to my colleagues in my new job, my new career, that I'm capable of doing the job just as well as somebody with both legs."

good for him. my son lost his leg and he became a fully active sherrif 25 years ago, maybe one of the first because he was flown all over talking to amputees who wanted to be a cop. he now has 22 years as a officer. you may have seen him on the cops show. very proud of him.

Attitudes have changed along with much better prosthetics.

    Good, it's about time.

Disabled folk have all the participation responsibilities of the fully abled but are often denied the benefits of that participation.
