What to use to secure a side handle to a kayak

Wra22Wra22 Posts: 237 Deckhand
I need to replace a side carrying handle on my Ocean Prowler 13. I don't think simple well nuts will be strong enough since the handle has to bear all the weight of the yak. I can't get inside to secure a nut in that location

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

What's wrong with the way the factory had it secured, usually the handles wear out and you just need to get a new one unscrew the old handle and replace. You should be able to get access to any hardware from the hatch that's in front of the seat.

Mine were secured by pop rivets. My handle ripped before the pop rivets ever came loose. Drill through the head of the pop rivets and use a rivet gun to put a new one in it's place. They have a handle kit on the ocean kayak website

Be careful drilling out the old rivet... it will want to spin and/or heat up either one is not good because it will tend to widen the hole which is not good for the new pop-rivet. Make sure you either replace the rivet with the same diameter as the one you remove.
If there is any way possible, and if you google it there are a few creative ways of doing this, get a fender washer on the blind side for extra support.
