One of the lawyers who helped Casey Anthony walk free after she was accused of killing her daughter in 2011 has been arrested for an alleged scheme to smuggle drugs from Central America into the United States.

Todd Macaluso, 54, was arraigned in federal court in Brooklyn earlier this month after being caught in Haiti.

His plan was allegedly to fly cocaine from Ecuador to Honduras before smuggling that into the United States.

Authorities noticed Macaluso in October while they investigated drug traffickers who were trying to use a plane registered in the U.S..

Macaluso would fly from Haiti to Ecuador to pick up nearly two tons of cocaine - nearly two tons, according to the New York Daily News.

He would then transport that to Honduras and later to the United States, NYPD Detective Alexander Sosa of the DEA task force said.

One of Macaluso's alleged accomplices told investigators he planned to fly a Falcon 10 aircraft, according to Sosa.

Carlos Almonte Vasquez and Humberto Osuna Contreras, who are co-defendants with the former lawyer, said they met Macaluso in Port au-Prince early this month to plot out how to pull of the drug smuggle.

'Macaluso described, in the presence of both Almonte Vasquez and Osuna Contreras, the structure of the subject aircraft, stating that it could hold 1,500 kilograms of cocaine,' Sosa said.

All three men were flown to MacArthur Airport in Long Island to be arraigned.

They were ordered to be held without bail after it was determined they were flight risks.

Before Macaluso got caught up in the scheme, he represented Anthony, who was charged with killing her daughter Caylee in 2008.

Anthony was acquitted in 2011 and Macaluso reportedly flew her out of Orlando on his plane, the Daily News reported.

But this incident isn't Macaluso's only time getting in trouble with the law.

He was sentenced to five months in prison last year after he was convicted of defrauding clients in California.

Macaluso was on a supervised release when he was arrested again this month.

He has been appointed a lawyer by the courts.
