Perfect day! Grouper 1, Me 0.

Took a friend out Saturday. Left Homosassa around 8:30 and ran out to 30' in flat seas to look for some grouper. Flat seas made for a nice quick run at 26 knts. Got to the first spot and put out the plugs and trolled good looking bottom. Nothing, zero, nada. Marked some really nice rocks but marked no fish. We were soon surrounded by approx a dozen boats and a thousand crab traps. Ran in to 24' trolled and drifted a few rocks bottom fishing. NADA. Well, 3 lizard fish. Then made a quick stop in 20', same ole. Nothing. UGH! :banghead Decided to run in a pick up a few reds to save the day. Put two 24" reds in the box quickly and called it a day.

Awesome day on the water but really wanted a grouper dinner. Thought with the tide ripping, 3 days after super moon and cold front on the way the grouper would be feeding like they had a hole in their stomach. Boy was I wrong. Time to go exploring and find some new rocks.

Fishing and gettin groceries is two different things. But awesome day none the less.

The week after the full moon always sucks for grouper. Back in the day when we used to fish for them commercial, we wouldn't even bother going out. The flat spot usually starts a day after the big moon and lasts for 4-5 days. The best periods are always the week before the full and new moons.

Inshore fishing is typically OK right after a full moon until the tides slow down.

I would call the inshore bite on Saturday "ok" also. There was an insane amount of water moving inshore and I assume the same offshore. With the tide ripping we had to seek out calmer (skinnier) water to find reds.

Dove Saturday Hernando Beach 22 ft to 45 ft , only saw 2 gags on 6 dives. Hog fish was good. No bait seen except for schools of perch. A lot of small mangro and small red snapper, jacks and big trigger fish. Gags have been scarce and it seems to be getting worse . Mad Max
