West End Bahamas Relief Efforts

CNTDRCNTDR Posts: 890 Officer
Fortunately, our neighborhood had minimal damage due to Hurricane Mathew. As you know Grand Bahamas was devastated. I spoke with a Ft Lauderdale rep for Old Bahama Bay this morning and she said that Mathew has done more damage than the last two hurricanes that plowed thru there. I have attached an image of the hurricane eye encompassing the entire West End area. The phones and internet have been down all week. I am sure you will see pictures of the devastation on TV and social media.

With all this in mind, I am planning a trip over there next Sat and Sunday the 15th and 16th. Weather permitting of course. I do have a spot open on my boat should anyone have the time and opportunity to help out we would really appreciate that! I am encouraging others to run across in their boats and help as well.

Thanks
Jeff
ps please feel free to add any images of the destruction to thread
pss I have just been informed that there is a relief effort going on at Lantana Airport :-)

    JEff,
do you know if the airport is open? We can bring medical supplies over for emergencies.
I may be able to bring my 44 over next weekend if need be.

Thanks for all the interest and concern!
My friends Mike and Kim called me last night as they were planning on running their boat over to Old Bahama bay today. I jumped at the chance to help out. After a trip to Lowes, Home Depot and Harbor Freight, I felt that I was ready to meet them at the boat Saturday at 6 am.
We filled every livewell, fishbox and console with Tarps, food, water, roof nails, tools, juice boxes for the kids, propane stoves, lights, batteries, etc. We had half the open deck cluttered with supplies as well. The trip over was rough, however filled with anticipation and concern. We had heard the reports and seen a few images, however that didn't prepare us for what we saw in person.
We arrived at OBB, docked next to a 50' Post (which btw had as much food and supplies as your neighborhood Publix laid out on the dock), and began to survey the damage. The extensive damage was, to say the least, shocking!
After we were done unloading the boat, Sharon the Marina manager walked up to me with tears on her cheek. She told me that Hurricane Mathew completely destroyed her families house. The entire house was swept away and destroyed all the way down to the concrete slab!Sharon shared images of the destruction, we hugged and I cried with her. Needless to say, we asked her to pick out whatever she needed from our supplies.
To make a long story short, we received a lot of satisfaction knowing that our efforts were directed specifically for those who needed it the most. During our short time there, the natives were exceptionally glad to see us and made us feel like family.
The Bahamian gov't doesn't have Fema, The Red Cross, National Guard or any services like we are so fortunate to have in states. Please take the time to donate supplies or services asap as this relief effort will be ongoing for many months.
They have no power, water or sanitation services.

Wow Jeff. I just got off the phone with Tj he was on that post. His story is very similar to yours saying it is total devestation over there. He said they need us in a big way. This is where every fisherman needs to step up the bat and donate. I am not someone that donates money usually unless it's for my kids baseball team but I found this extreme urge to donate for them and I have to say it felt really good. So guys anything will help please find it in your hearts to get with Jeff and share the wealth. After all they share their beautiful pristine waters with us.

it is beautiful how people are coming together to help the good Bahamian people!

Drop offs for donated goods set up at Jupiter -Tequesta Air, Stuart Jet Ctr and XGeneration in Lantana. I can post more details as needed if more people want to help!

Wow Jeff that's pretty crazy. You and I have been there several times and those buildings are usually very familiar to me, but now just in pieces. A friend of mine has only been able to get 2 messages out, but her home and business is really messed up. I can't understand why this is not being reported in the local news. This is local...

We had a friend of ours fly her plane over to Venice from FPO on Wednesday to hide out with us. Latest news is that FPO wouldn't open till Monday.

There are 2 DC-3's flying relief out of Venice to both Haiti and the Bahamas, so if you're on the West coast and want to pitch in, there is a way. As mentioned, the storm was absolutely devastating to GBI. Many people lost their roofs including the top floor of the Bell Channel condos (as you come into Bell Channel on the starboard side), and part of Pelican Bay hotel. Ocean Reef got hit really hard. Lots of overturned cars. Surprisingly, those flimsy-looking bars and restaurants on Port Lucaya faired sort of OK, as the hotel across the street seems to have blocked the worst of the wind coming out of the South.

Good work guys. Those pictures are amazing and left a big knot in my stomach.

Please try to gather up any of the following: Roof tarps, roofing nails, bottled water (btw Lowes has 36 bottles for only $5), juice boxes for the kids, "D" and "C" batteries, flashlights, non perishable type food, hammers, hand held saws, large trash bags, propane bottles, propane canister's, etc.
The Bahamians have no electric, water, or sanitation services.

Please private message me as I am happy to meet you in the N Palm Beach and Riviera Beach areas to p/u supplies. Or as Eric said, please drop off any supplies that you can to the Stuart and Lantana Airports.
We are headed over next Saturday the 15th so that we may, once again, deliver those supplies directly to those who need it the most.
Customs will not charge you when you arrive by boat. The airports are open as we saw at least a dozen small planes around the West End area.
    Thanks so much!

Thanks much to all that are helping out as it is very bad over there. Vida Jr. (Bootle Bay) just left my house in St. Pete with a rented mini van packed full with four generators (3.5kw, 4.4kw, 5.0kw, and 8.0kw) as well as a lot of provisions donated by me a lot of my buddies over here on the west coast. Matt Reder (son of one of my best friends) also established a donation site at "gofundme.com/2t3utxw" that has already raised nearly $5000. I will personally administer the distribution of the donated funds to this site so there should be no concern about any impropriety. The provisions that Vida Jr. is headed back to Fort Lauderdale now with are going to be flown over tomorrow morning as I have arranged with the shipping company that he works for two flights of a large Cessna set up for cargo delivery. I understand the plane can handle about 1700 pounds of cargo. My best guess is that the second flight will go across Tuesday as Vida Jr. has been provided with enough funding to fill the plane for the second flight. Vida Jr. can be contacted at 9542254060. He should be back in Lauderdale by noon today and plans on dropping off the cargo at the shipping company. I believe there will be some room on the plane for tomorrow and a lot of room for the next flight. Thanks for all your help.

We just dropped a load off at the Stuart airport and per Pat Price and Joe Reiger the most critical items needed are clothing, shoes and medical supplies in the next couple of days. They have 4 planes flying multiple trips daily.
