  The cities and counties pass ordinances restricting access to beaches including the distance you must remain from the beach in a boat. You would have to check the ordinance for a particular municipality to determine their restrictions.

  Scenario 1: He was trying to ask if you had a spare beer onboard. Scenario 2: did you have a woman in a bikini on the boat? If so he was asking you to come in closer so that ..........!

  You were probably in violation of one or both of these Nassau County ordinances:
  
  Jet skies or motorized boats shall remain at idle speed until they are at least 500 feet in a straight line from the shore area.
  
  Personal water craft and boats shall be operated or launched no closer than 1,500 feet in either direction of the lifeguard tower.

  Thanks CountryBumpkin. I checked out that link and read the whole thing, the part you point out would seem to control, but we were at "idle speed" or less and there was no life guard tower anywhere along there.
  
  FishStix, too funny. He seemed way too uptight to be a beer drinker, and I guess unless he is interested in middle aged men with beer bellies, there was no bikini on board!

  You're welcome........I was being sarcastic when I said you were in violation of their ordinance.......unless you were a local how would you have ever even heard of it?
  
  Maybe Barney interprets it as if you are within 500ft of shore you need to be making a straight line away from shore, or maybe some beachfront resident called and complained you were blocking their sunrise view with your beer bellies. :rotflmao
