I got ticks bad.

DJWDJW Posts: 558 Officer
Everytime I go out to my lease I pull about 10 ticks off of me.
I am going to start using some permethrin based repellent. It says to wet down your clothes and then let it dry.
Does this stuff work?
Does it really last for multiple uses?
Even if you wash the clothes?

Also it claims to have no smell but it does have a little chemical odor. Any problem for animals?

Thanks.

I used it my first 2 times in a certain wma for turkey. No ticks. Went back last weekend to hike around and had maybe a dozen on me. I didn't use any on that trip. It made me a believer. I'm going to use it every time from now on.

That's what I do. I re-do for each quota not each outing. No ticks where before I'd pick em up. I've had deer at 15 Yards no problem...more concerned about *my* stink than using permethrin. With that many ticks I'd sure be using it

    Chiggers too

Any tips on how much and where? Boots? Socks? Pants too? Just the pants near the boots?
  • GRIZZLGRIZZL Posts: 909 Officer
YES TO ALL(not socks given I wear rubber 18" boots). I wear a bandana and I do that too. Like was said..get em good and wet and let dry

Ticks climb upon vegetation to wait for a host. I've seen em waist high waiting..so do it all

I buy the sawyer brand. I Spray down both sides of pants and shirts. It works well, didn't get one tick this spring while turkey hunting on a property that is loaded with them.

If you start using permethrin often buy a jug from the feed supply store and mix up your own in a spray bottle. I don't remember the ratio but it will save you some money. Have never come home with a tick while using it. It helps with the mosquitos as well.

Spray your clothes and let em dry (don't use on skin!). I do mine every 2nd or 3rd wash.

Heres a thread with some good information on mixing on your own http://oldgobbler.com/Forum/index.php/topic,3417.0.html

Absolutely. You will actually see ticks on your clothes dying if you look close. I had khakis on last weekend for our workday and got into some and watched it work!

Heres a good website citing studies conducted by the US Army.

Yes it works. You will find dead and dying ticks on your clothes. So that should tell you that you have to let the spray dry.

I just spray the sleeves, collar, waist, and boot line. And completely spray my hat. I won't hunt Andrews WMA without Permethrin.

You can buy the concentrate and make your own. It is much cheaper than buying the Sawyers. I buy the 10% Martins concentrate. It works great.

    As everyone has said.....it works!!

We marked 70 acres of trees a few weeks ago......and yes it took a LONG TIME!!!.......which entailed a whole lot of pushing through and tromping over of vegetation. Clothing was treated with permethrin with the result of only a couple of red bugs and a tick or two that managed to fall down the back of a shirt or the like.

    Without it......we'd of died!!

I have been using the Sawyer brand for a few years now. Just like the other replies, it works great. After my clothes come out of the dryer I hang them outside and spray them down. I also spray my boots. Mosquitoes wont land on you either. I still use my thermacell though for them.

Spot on advice. I bought the concentrate (was about $25) several years ago. It's 38%. The stuff you get marketed for the woods from sporting goods places is only .05%. So it's over 75 times stronger than that stuff. Get a spray bottle and mix with A LOT of water. That 32 ounce container of concentrate will last me several lifetimes. Just soak them good and let completely dry. I spray my boots, pants and shirts with a good dousing. It stinks when wet but odorless dry. I got a tick duck hunting once, of all places. I found it under my chin that night. I am guessing when I went into the woods to cut palm fronds I got it there. Those things give me the creeps knowing what they can do to you.

The company I work with sell all the permethrin to every feed store in the State. The 32 oz 10% should not cost more than $25.00 and it goes a long way.

You can also buy it in 8oz and 16oz.

You do not want STARI or Lyme (there is no absolute cure) so spray your clothes a day ahead of time so they can dry.

If you have access to a tractor and mower, mow all the roads and trails to your stands on your lease. You won't get any more ticks and won't have to worry about spraying your clothes.

And agitate for burning on the land! Kills ticks and helps everything else.

Agitate for late spring/early summer burns, bswiv! That's Nature's way, and it'll kill more ticks/redbugs! You know that!

You are correct........do though have to be sure that a cool season burn or two is not in order to reduce initial fuel loads and take off some of the duff if present.

We were in Etoniah State Forest yesterday doing a land management review with the Florida Forest Service and they were burning a block......with another scheduled for Thursday.

If you go to Tractor Supply, in the section where the equine/cattle pest supplies are located. They sell a bottle of 10% Permethrin for very cheap. Mix 1 ounce per gallon, pour some in a spray bottle and use the rest to spray your house for bugs. 1 small bottle should last several years

It works but so does drinking a good shot of this stuff http://bragg.com/books/acv_excerpt.html every night. Plus it has health benefits too. You won't get a tick or redbug on you.

I see someone else who knows what good for them. This stuff works. Drink it everyday. It benefits to keep my allergies from acting up also so I can go to the woods more often.

Someone told me it works on keeping mosquitos away too?

It works on all insects......I buy permethrine at 35% pure off Amazon. Mix one ounce with 32 ounces of water and saturate your hunting clothes. Allow six days for odor to be completely gone. Its good for six washes. Just don't get it around cats if you have any because it's harmful to them.

Works great. I always regret when I hit the woods in clothes I haven't treated.
