Testing the VR on the 200-500. Image was shot hand held, 500mm, ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/25th second exposure. Image is as shot except exposure corrected a bit and cropped. I took three shots and all were usable but this one was slightly sharper.
Nikkor did something right with the 200-500. The VR is amazing. The claim is three stops and I believe it. Yesterday I shot birds and was more than 2-stops over exposed due to lighting issues. most are usable.
Shot (tripod) this one last night with a Nikon coolpix p9000 which was bought on recommendation of WaterEngineer. It lost a lot of sharpness getting it small enough to upload on this site.
This was shot steadied against a palm tree with my Kenko 1.4 TC on the 200-500. 700mm, f/8 1/200 ISO 160. My keeper rate was much lower with the TC added. Maybe I was shakier than normal though.

Capybara's are vicious and should not be let alone with small children. In-laws are another matter.............
I've tried capturing the moon on many occasions and it never comes out right.
you must have steady hands...
I shot this one at iso 200, 1/400, f11, with a ef-l 100-400 at 400mm
I think I could have got it sharper on a tripod...
