What kind of fish is this??

Good afternoon ms, I'm hoping someone can help me identify this fish. I caught a few of them the other night and Sykes Creek off of live shrimp.

Looks like a silver perch. Hits like a freight train. Believe it or not, fillet up a baker's dozen and blacken them. Right tasty actually.

We catch them in the rivers here in the Big Bend. They will tear up a jig and grub combo.

Best dang bait for snook or gator trout too.

Yep, those are silver perch aka sugar trout. I purposefully target them using chicken or sabiki rigs with very small gold hooks tipped with shrimp to use for bull red bait (as well as snook/gator trout). They seem to be the last bait fish around once the pinfish disappear after a couple of good cold fronts. Though they are too soft to hook in the body - so I hook them through the nose. I've never ate them before because the biggest one I've ever seen was maybe 10in long - but I bet they would make a good stew.

Silver Perch, the net boats pick them up as bycatch along the beaches when trawling for shrimp all the time. Some days I've seen football fields of them floating behind them. They love squid tipped sabikis around structure in the sandy bottoms. Watch out for their razor sharp gillplate! They are great offshore bait if you can keep them alive.
