greenies

There was a decent amount of greenies outside the port recently but seem to be challenge to cast net. Will greenies hit on a sabaki.

In my experience- yes, unless they are really small. Last Saturday out of PC we sabiki'd the bait pods in 40ft with easy success. Big thread fins (greenies) and big sardines. I like both better than pogies. The bottom fish and kings at 8A agree with me...
    Tight lines.

Can I ask how you locate the bait pods? I went out of Port Can Wednesday (beautiful day with 2 ft waves all day) and had no luck with sabakis. I stopped at several navigation buoys outside the port and fished sabikis on them and didn't catch any.

What do you do to find the bait pods?

Small areas of trembling water on the surface when the bait schools are being pressured from below. Almost like it's raining, but just in that one spot. They tend to move fast and change direction which makes cast netting tough.

I was out of PC on the 16th and there where tons of greenies right outside of the port on the south point of the rocks. I was marking them on the depth finder and throwing my net, then letting it sink for a while. It was around 15-20ft, they where tough to get but I was able to get about a dozen. Didn't have much luck on the sabiki rig but I have caught them like crazy before on them in deeper water. The kings and snapper loved them though thats for sure!

Yea they were marking everywhere in that 15 - 20' range but they are difficult to net next time I'll get the sibiki rig out. I tried the d can and dutch wreck no bait so used dead sardine no luck.
