Eleuthera by land in Sept.

Anne and I recently returned from an amazing vacation in Eleuthera, Bahamas. We found the Eleutherans to be extremely friendly, helpful and resourceful. Eleuthera is a Greek name which means freedom. In the 1600's, Puritan's from Bermuda found religious freedom here and began thriving communities. A century later, British loyalists from America found their way to enjoy political freedom here.
We had plans to visit the island by land rather than by sea. Last year I reported on our trip to the Exuma's. Eleuthera is very close to The Exuma's, however it is extremely different. The rich history, friendly natives and points of interest, have made Eleuthera an island which we plan on visiting again. Next time, we plan on fishing and will hopefully bring the boat and tender. Some of the highlights will follow. However, please keep in mind that we spent a lot of time doing nothing just like we planned. It seemed as though many others did the same. As you will note from the pictures Eleuthera is a very beautiful island, unfortunately the roads leave a lot to be desired. They do however add to the island's charm. On day two, we traveled from our beachfront home, in N Palmetto Point, to the southernmost part of the island called Lighthouse Beach. The beach is rated as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Bahamas. The water is so clear that it is difficult to determine the difference between the pink sand and the water. On top of the cliffs, is a very old broken down lighthouse that at one time warned the passing ships of the dangerous barrier reefs that parallel the shoreline. The huge cliffs that rise over 130' provide a 360 degree breathtaking view of the ocean and land. There are a few caves there worth exploring. Speaking of caves, you must visit Preacher's Cave on the north end of the island. That cave provided refuge to William Sayle and his group of shipwrecked Puritan's who fled religious persecution in Bermuda. They founded the first permanent settlement in the Bahamas. Other areas of interest are the Queen's Baths, Surfers Beach, Ocean Hole, Banyan Tree and wild horses and The Glass Window Bridge which separates the rough Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
Our Atlantic side beach front home was exactly what we wanted and exceeded our expectations. There are a few high end resorts, no tall condo's, however we wanted a real Bahamian experience. The beach was literally 40' from the back of the house. We only saw two other people on "our" 3 mile stretch of pink sand. We attempted to visit one of those high end resorts, however a celebrity was there and we weren't on her guest list. Many other famous people do call Eleuthera their home including Lenny Kravitz. He is known to hang out and jam at a local oceanfront bar. On our last day the rental owner told us that Mick and Keith rented "our" house earlier this year. Maybe that was why the furniture looked a bit worn lol
If you are interested in other areas of this wonderful island or would like the specifics of the rental home, please let me know. The home is a perfect retreat for romance or a couple with a small family. They do have another home on the same property for a large group.
