Tarpon

Captain KidCaptain Kid Posts: 7 Greenhorn
I have been trying to land my first tarpon for a while now. I have jumped some but they pulled the hook. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to land my first tarpon?

Tight lines everybody, Captain Kid

Just a heads up> Never ever ask a "Real" fishing question in the "Off Topic" section.... ask it in the "General section"...
The Off topic section is for people who drink a lot and will wonder "WTH" are you asking a question like that in here...

Trust me> they have been kind.... I really taught it was going to be worst or funnier.... More then likely you are also using too small
of a hook.... move up to a bigger one.. we use circles and don't do anything till we feel him move with it... then we reel like crazy
and slam him as we are reeling... and I mean SLAM!! you have to drive that hook home.... Do it like you mean it and don't
hold back... if you slack off just for a nano second... he will be gone... You might want to ask a mod to move this thread for you or
just start a new one in the general section.....good luck...

Sorry, I had four doctor's appointments today. Did someone ask me something?

Use a Mustad 39951BLN in 7/0. When a tarpon bites, reel in all the slack until your drag starts to go out, then set the hook several times and be ready to bow when they jump a few seconds later.

after the fish takes you bait leave your bail open and let the fish swim away ... after a few yards palm your reel and set the hook ... a simple tug will set the hook ... you DO NOT need to slam a circle hook ... then let the fish run with only light pressure from your palm until he slows a little ... then apply large pressure until the fish jumps ... at which time you remove all pressure from your bail so that the hook won't be thrown ... after the jump go back to the pressure needed to work the fish towards you ... when you have had enough sport cut the line ... the fish will dislodge the hook with out the trauma of a de-hooking device

I never use my bail when tarpon fishing ... I've only caught one 200 lb.er but I've caught so many smaller ones I quit because it seemed too easy ... most of those fish were caught from my dock ... "somewhere in Islamorada"
