I have to confess I didn't make much past 5 minutes, the audio was bad and she is an inexperienced (lousy) speaker. Might be my hearing....to many gunshots to exposed ears.
If she was wearing a bikini I'm sure I would have made it halfway.. at least.

At any rate, I can offer this: She said that there was between 5000 and 100,000 pythons and she said that the raccoon observations were depleted 99% and other species accordingly.
She also said that Marsh rabbits are "adorable".
Not a lot of hard data....seems to me, any assessments regarding these snakes and their numbers and habits are very speculative.
On the other hand... it's not a stretch for me to believe that these snakes are impacting the local fauna in a big, negative way.
That being said, it's surprising that so little is being done about it.
The last time I looked into Python hunting, it was kind of discouraging. Experienced hunters were coming from far away and not having any success. From what I could glean off the net, the most efficient way to find and kill these snakes was to wait for cold weather and drive around and looking for them on the roads, getting warm in the sun. Not my kind of hunting.
I also read that the check station was on the east side of state, so checking the snake could mean an hour or two of driving for someone hunting on the west side. That is just nonsense.
Hunting a reptile is not something I have any experience at. I suspect that if you really wanted to kill a pile, or a monster, you need good science. I would be willing to invest the time any money to "do my part" in the eradication program, but I need more information....knowledge is power when it comes to hunting... or anything really.
I'm sure their have been discussions regarding this here. I think if we put our heads together we could come up with a way to least gain some success. The hides are worth something and I understand there is a market for the meat. I read somewhere it could fetch 50$ a pound. Seems like I read something about mercury in the meat but....doesn't all meat have some mercury in it?
Does anyone have any experience hunting this creature? :huh
I would be guessing... but I'm thinking the use of a pheromone might make for an effective measure in the capture or killing of these animals. Synthesizing this might be costly, but probably a lot cheaper then the alternative. And it would give Adia Sovie something better to do
    What do you think?

There will be another "python hunt" put on by the FWC next Jan. or so. However, these events are mostly PR trying to keep attention on the problem. Less than 100 pythons were killed in the first event.....and most of them by people who are in the swamps regularly. Pythons are hard to find, even with radio collars on them....and spread out into the most difficult terrain where literally no one can do a reasonably good job of looking for them.....Most pythons are killed on the roads, levees, etc. or within a few hundred feet of them.

Frankly, they are not going to be removed from the habitat they are in today and will have a continuing negative impact on all the animals into the foreseeable future. The Everglades National Park is full of them and little effort is being made to reduce their numbers. The only possible way to have an impact is to develop some sort of biological warfare method....a disease that targets them....in my personal opinion.

UF has been tagging them and releasing them back into the wild. Not sure how many have gone up missing. Snake is only part of the issue with small animals disappearing. Look at the yote population and what they are eating. If it is true that all small game is disappearing down there then you better watch your small game seasons. Better indicator on what the population levels are of small game. Right now no limits so I would say that it is not that big of deal. If the bell starts ringing true, the FWC will have to restrict take.
The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones. Hopefully the next man is not dropping his stones on the mountain you are trying to move.

FYI, all 100 rabbits who were radio collared all died by snakes during the study period.

Once again our Gov't has allowed this non indigenous species to get out of control. Why does our state even acknowledge the presence of these USFWS people if they continually keep destroying Fl? And more of our land is up for the grab bag? Pitiful at best.

Again re introduce hogs south of the ally and it will help . Hog population started dropping early 90 and snake population started booming then . hogs love to eat snakes . One is way better then the other . Also more panther might move back south .

I disagree with your assertion. Not Govts. Fault. They may have not done as much as could have been done but clearly not the cause.
A...holes from the city letting their unwanted pets go is the cause. Still happening today. Everglades is ground zero for s..bag people letting their unwanted Dogs and Cats loose. Along with Spiders, Snakes, Lizzards, etc. The Florida climate provides the rest of the puzzle. A lot of creatures can live here !
For Anyone thinking the snake thing is new. Red Tail Boa 7' found on county line road in Collier County...40 years ago.
16-18' Python pulled out from under a house on the beach in Ft. laud... 20 years ago.

Hurricane Andrew had a lot to do with populating the glades with snakes, too

don't disagree on the cause, but letting go under the radar, and continually allowing to increase is the Gov't fault.

THEY fail in just about every national forest they govern..weather it be fires, marijuana, snakes, exotic plants, the list goes on. Not to mention ruining the rest of the glades because of a dumb little bird who makes his or her nest to low on the ground

So how are these Federal people keeping the hogs out?
How much is the state spending to control Brazilian pepper in the everglades?

First of all I don't think anyone has a real count on the actual numbers. Every time one of these studies comes out the numbers are different. If they are such a problem then why not follow the trackers to the source and remove it.

When they mate they get big balls of smaller males . best time to track them is during the winter .

But according to gottheitch22 it would be a waste of time, as the Panthers would just eat the hogs, and then there would be more panthers.....Obviously. More panthers is... bad.. right? I'm guessing... you're not a biologist.
Every other place in the south is having problems keeping hogs out. But, mysteriously, where there should be hogs out the yang, there are none here. I'm not sure if it's because the panthers eat them, or the feds have miraculous hog deterrent, or there's hogs here, you just can't find them.
How is it the panthers are not eating the snakes? You would think that a snake is much easier to catch and provides more protein per pound. Maybe that's what the Park Service is banking on? Panthers eating snakes?
Can anyone clear this up for me? Because It's pretty convoluted...don't you think?
Nobody knows how many Panthers there are, nobody knows how many Pythons there are..no one knows how to catch and/or kill a Python.... how hard can it be? Outsmarting a snake?
Maybe the pythons ate the hogs? Oh wait... let me guess.... no one knows how many hogs there are either.
Neither one of these is the biggest threat to the glades and without the glades you have no game at all.

I think what bothers me the most is: You give someone a public forum and they type the first stupid nonsense that comes into their head

As far as the FFWC goes....I would rather you just slap me and call me stupid than ask me to make sense of anything that organization does.
Honestly, I feel that between the FFWC and the Water Management Districts are concerned....As long as they have game and a place to hunt, they could not care less about your freezer...just keep buying the permits and tags.
Special opportunity hunts are your game being sold to those who are willing to pay more for game.... game that belongs to you in the first place. Where does that end?
Thanks for the opportunity to express myself,
At this point, I will graciously solicit intelligent responses.....
Just don't expect me to reply to any more nonsense.
