  Gothe is only 150 miles south of where I found mine.
  A Mule Team could travel that far in a couple days..
  Resin / Sap was also used for Lantern fuel and Perfume base.
  Google Naval Stores and you'll know what kept the South in shoes during a very bleak time.

  I found one in Steinhatchee springs last year I almost just left it laying on the ground but thought what the heck that would look kind of cool hanging on the wall so I took it home, will post a picture next week, did not realize it was a collector’s item, nowhere near as impressive and the on the OP posted. there were pieces of clay pot laying around on the ground and I looked a little but did not find a whole one, maybe next time.

  My wife and I own a 1 acre lot in downtown Gville with a bunch of long leaf on it and they all have catfaces. They are all over the state and the southeast corresponding with long leaf flatwoods and sandhills. They also tapped large slash pines as well.
  
  I hunted Goethe last year and found at least 15 nice catfaces in just one afternoon. Lots of longleaf!

  I have never been very clear on what exactly a catface was/is. Is it when the pine is opened up into the bark? Are they natural, man made, or both? Like I said, I have heard the term quite a bit, but never been real clear on exactly what it is.

  They aren't just found in the sandhills. Seen plenty in places that are a long long way from the nearest hill of any kind.

  I know a few areas I'd like to go out and look around again for some more stuff. I found a stump one time with some metal on it, but I didn't pay much attention to it. Lots of broken pots, I bet there's so,e cat faces around there.

  We fan out over the land of catface in modern day 'recreation' mode,it is interesting to study the history.
  
  "Can't to Can't" was one saying back then- the workers worked from 'can't see daylight to can't see daylight'. (boy,if I could just muster the will to hunt that hard,quit Tree Hugging Clay Pot Rambles....:grin )
  
  Catface/pot activity continued to around 1950

  Hunters are present yet relatively uncommon in Florida :wink

  Allen, you are welcome to borrow the one I found for show and tell, it has the tin on it too but no pot, it is about 24 - 30" tall so it is not too big to handle, it is at my place in the Hatch.
