Dual battery setup.. Is this still ok?

I know people say this is an "old" way of doing it, but can I still hook them up like this? I already have one of these switches where it is "1, 2 or both" so I am just going to put it in with the new battery I got...

Also, one of my batteries is older, should I not run "both" ever if this is the case?

My boat has been wired like that for about 25 years. Never had a problem. Used to run one or the other but changed to always running on all . Batteries seem to last longer ?

Did you purchase the batteries together? Or close to the same time? I heard not to do "both" if the batteries arent in the same date range. I thought it was a sale pitch when I bought my new one but then looked it up and saw people confirming that it "may" use the power of the older battery cause it is the one pulling most the charge to try and level them out
