Kite Fishing?

I grew up in st. cloud, fished out of canaveral for years, and on occasions, still do. Im now living down in delray beach while attending florida atlantic university and fish on several boats, including mating on a top notch charter boat (let me know if anyones looking for a charter to catch sailfish, i know a great guy). But any ways, my point being no matter what time of year it is, we always are flying one kite, if not 2, with at least 2 baits off of it. We've caught sailfish, dolphin, wahoo, kingfish, cobia, and sharks doing this and i honestly can't imagine live bait fishing ever again without a kite. my question, and reason behind this post, is has anyone ever attempted kite fishing off of canaveral? if so, any success?

I'll bump this one... we went down to PBI late last year with E$ he brought the Kite gear, good times. Before I invest in that gear want to workout some other trolling win!

I Also grew up in Delray Beach and we fished kites extensively. Now fishing out of Sebastian I rarely see anyone fishing a kite. Here in Central Florida the fisherman tend to troll more to cover more ground and are not necessarily targeting Sailfish as much as in SF. I understand you can catch anything on a kite. Also, remember probably the top bait in SF is a Goggle Eye which are few and far between in Central Florida. If you fish one here in CF I am sure you will catch fish if you use a Pogie, Blue Runner, or Threadfin.

I think hardcore is right you need to cover more ground here. The reefs are not as close together here. When the king fish series used to come around here I saw a few of those guys kite fishing 8a and I don't see why a place like that it should be a great tactic.

Yea I agree with Hardcore. Down south the west wall of the gulf stream is about two miles offshore and drops quickly. The hot zone for pelagic species is in that 125' - 300' range. In Broward, Palm Beach and Martin counties that depth range can be only 1/2 to 1 mile apart.
Beginning just south of Ft Pierce inlet northward a shelf begins to protrude out from the coast and the drop off is more gradual.
When you kite fish you drift slowly and with the target zone less than a mile wide you tend to spend more time " in the zone" with the fish more concentrated. North of Ft. Pierce the target zone can be 3-5 miles wide. Straight out of Sebastian where I live we have a shelf between 120 and 300 that we call the "dead zone" that is nearly 8 miles wide. Fish can be scattered anywhere in that zone or out to 800' depending on currents and wind. There are a lot of eddy's around here making the water temps varied.
Still lots of fun with the kites but the action is more limited round here.
Hope this helps and happy hunting.
