I met Mike and Russ at the boat storage yard at 5:00, loaded the boat and drove to the Hudson Ramp. We were on the water at 6:30 and ran out in the dark to Mike's bait spot. We baited the sabiki's, but had to wait till sun-up to start catching them, but we had the well loaded by 7:45 and were off to the first spot, a wreck in about 70'. Put a couple gags in the box, and I got hit by a big fish that I could not control and it ran me into the wreck. The bite died and we moved to a second wreck, same depth, and did the same thing, a couple gags in the box and again, I hooked one that I had half way up before it decided it wanted to go home, and did with little trouble on the fishes side. Mike is a diver and said he has seen 30-40# gags on these wrecks. IMHO, both fish were jewfish or big AJ's. Sometimes the ones that get away are more memorable than the ones you land. Tackle was a Daiwa Saltist 30H, loaded with 30# Diamond on a 30-50# custom rod, and the drag locked down, all capable of landing big bottom fish. Line came back shredded both times.
