Got OWNED yesterday - 9/29

I met Mike and Russ at the boat storage yard at 5:00, loaded the boat and drove to the Hudson Ramp. We were on the water at 6:30 and ran out in the dark to Mike's bait spot. We baited the sabiki's, but had to wait till sun-up to start catching them, but we had the well loaded by 7:45 and were off to the first spot, a wreck in about 70'. Put a couple gags in the box, and I got hit by a big fish that I could not control and it ran me into the wreck. The bite died and we moved to a second wreck, same depth, and did the same thing, a couple gags in the box and again, I hooked one that I had half way up before it decided it wanted to go home, and did with little trouble on the fishes side. Mike is a diver and said he has seen 30-40# gags on these wrecks. IMHO, both fish were jewfish or big AJ's. Sometimes the ones that get away are more memorable than the ones you land. Tackle was a Daiwa Saltist 30H, loaded with 30# Diamond on a 30-50# custom rod, and the drag locked down, all capable of landing big bottom fish. Line came back shredded both times.

For them to school you Jack, I'm betting big heebs, when they're big turning them is about impossible. At least you bagged some goodins for the box!

Getting spooled is better than not hooking anything.

    Sounds FUN.

way different feeling getting skunked by an AJ vs a bottom jewfish/gag..

I was getting smoked by 20lb gags using a torium 30 with 100lb braid, 80lb leader. In shallower water they dont have the pressure (atmospheric) enabling them to fight harder IMO. Did you literraly have your drag locked down, or just near locked? I have learned that if you lock it down 100% you loose a lot of fish..

i have fished those gags off hudson using 50/50 and filled the box. its all about the first 20 sec. also the locked down drag makes them fight harder and break off..a little drags calms em down some. i've landed 300lb trash grouper on the snapper set up....dont force them up..lead them. works on most..but some fish just want to beat your **** and will bust you off no matter what...

"heebs?" ....I'm not Jewish, and I'm not crazy over changing names of fish to achieve political correctness, BUT...that term is offensive!

It's not about a "fishy"........it's about bad taste to thoughtful people.

thats why I prefer a Lever Drag for Grouper/AJ,,u should never be locked down on any fish. I know they are pricy but try to get your hands on a Shimano Talica ii 16 - 45lbs of drag.

I'm not Jewish either, nor am I a fan of political correctness, but that TRULY IS distasteful, and makes you sound like an ***!

  • Political correctness has now made it's way to fishing reports:hairraiser that's just great.
THERE SHOULD BE NO COMMERCIAL FISHING ALLOWED FOR ANY SPECIES THAT IS CONSIDERED OVERFISHED.

Yep, it sure has Jerry. From here on out I will refer to that species, the name changed to that giant Philistine warrior himself, Goliath. To really honor the species I vote David Grouper, Goliath was not exactly well liked in ancient Israel.

I wasn't referring to the name jewfish, I was referring to the term "heebs," which is a variation of the ethnic term "hebes," which as a Jew, you know is every bit as offensive as the term ****! At least my Jewish friends think so!

It's just a word, I am confident in who I am and what I represent, the word used in the context which it was conveys no intentional disrespect in my opinion. Just a word.

I haven't been on the forum in a while but I'm glad to see you guys are still stirring up trouble, lmao. Jack nice report. We were in 70' out of anclote opening day of the season and I couldn't buy a keeper gag. Seems like everyone else was in that same depth too.
