I get the annual count the change and do something fun. But to leave it long term seems penny wise. Would you stash cash under the bed too? This doesn't even tend to keep up with inflation. You are "losing" money hording those coins and counting them much later. Sure it is "found"money, but it would have been worth much more plunked into an account of some kind or US savings bonds or applied to existing debts.
Then look at what it costs the US govt -- we keep minting more coins to cover the ones you're taking out of circulation.
"Cash is King" can continue to keep people out of trouble, but it does strike me as out of date thinking for those with any budgetary ability. A credit card offers consumer protections, and with little effort (shopping for the right card) provides a 1% (or greater) cash back on purchases, which adds up.
I love "found" money, but long term and for "real" amounts of cash, this behavior doesn't make sense to me.
Ever since they put a 24hr Coin Operated Ice Machine <100yds from my house I NEVER have any extra change...
There should be NO Commercial Fishing for any fish species considered 'Over-fished' , 'Undergoing Overfishing' or Subject to Recreational Seasons, Limits, or Closures... Game Fish Status IS the Answer !!!
It gets thrown in my catch all drawer or in the kids piggy banks. Every couple of months we cash it in and divide it between their 509k plan. I don't use a lot of cash, but it's usually about $50.
