Grand Slam Owner Passes Away

JUPITER — Richard Black, owner of Grand Slam Tackle and Marine Center and host of several local fishing tournaments that raised more than $500,000 for local charities, died Friday at home of complications from a brain tumor. The Tequesta resident was 57.

“Richard had a soft spot in his heart for his community, especially children and people with handicaps. He supported preserving natural resources in all marine fisheries,” said his wife, Kathy.

Black, a West Palm Beach native, started the annual Grand Slam KDW Tournament in 1996. The other fishing tournaments hosted by Black included Bluewater Babes Fish for a Cure, Jupiter Billfish Tournament and Grand Slam Kids Fishing Day.

Proceeds went to the T and M Ranch, Coastal Conservation Association, Cancer Alliance of Health and Hope, Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper and other local charities.

“Richard also did many things under the radar. Veterans with the Wounded Warriors program would come into his store. He would give them free fishing tackle,” said Jimmy Burg, owner of the Square Grouper, one of the weigh stations for Bluewater Babes.

Black opened Grand Slam Tackle in 1995 in Jupiter.

He and business partner Jim McGrath in 2004 opened a second store on Blue Heron Boulevard in Riviera Beach.

Black is survived by his wife, Kathy E. Black; daughter, Sarah B. (Ben) Dritenbas of Tequesta; sons, Christopher M.H. (Brittany) Black of Tequesta, Richard B. (Carly) Black Jr. of Tequesta and William S. Black of Tequesta; sister, Deborah

B. (Skeeter) Lewis of West Palm Beach; brother, Douglas S. (Lynn) Black of Tequesta; six grandchildren and his parents, Richard and Anne “Cissy” Black of Sautee, Ga.

A memorial service is planned at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church on Prosperity Farms Road in North Palm Beach. [email protected] Twitter: @Billdipaolo
