Need help with vacation destination in the Spring: Boca Grande or Islamorada?

Looking to go first week of April. Have a 22 pathfinder. Mostly do inshore fishing. I have heard the winds can be pretty bad in the middle Keys in the spring. Just wanted to get some thoughts on how the fishing is that time of year.

Usually pretty windy in early April in the Keys. Don't know what you intended to target but it's a little early for the tarpon to be there consistently unless you hit an extended warming spell.

Yeah.....in a 22 Pathfinder, you'd be better off in the Lower Keys. Look at a map or aerial view and you'll see how the configuration of the Keys changes, once you hit Big Pine. South of there, are lots of basins where you can catch trout and ladyfish, if the wind blows. In Islamorada, you could head north towards the Everglades, but there is a LOT of water back there that is too skinny for an 11+ inch draft Pathfinder. If I were fishing that area in a boat like yours, I wouldn't stop until I reached East Cape, and then fished the outside, on up north from there. You can also run through Lake Ingraham and fish in there. There is plenty of doable water outside ENP, but the navigation gets complicated for a first timer.

Having said all that, whereas the water in that area tends to be very shallow with the aforementioned navigation problems, the bottom back there is generally soft. In the Lower Keys, there is a lot of hard bottom and if you miss by a 1/4 inch in places, it's good bye prop, lower unit, or worse. Good luck.

Boca Grande area offers a lot of water accessible in a boat such as yours and the bottom is also soft, unless you hit an oyster bar, submerged pipe, etc.
